Recent Geoscience Graduate Employment during the Pandemic, August 2020
AIPG
This data brief provides insights from the most recent results from the Geoscience COVID-19 study regarding the employment status of recent geoscience graduates. As of August 2020, 94% of geoscience graduates who earned their degree between 2014-2018 were employed, while 77% of graduates from 2019 and 44% of graduates from 2020 reported the same. The current Geoscience COVID-19 study data does not show deviation from long-term employment trends of recent geoscience graduates and illustrates the general progression from graduation to job seeking to employment. We will continue to provide current snapshots on the impacts of COVID-19 on the geoscience enterprise throughout the year. For more information, and to participate in the study, please click here.

AGI Currents — PPP Loan dataset as it relates to geoscience businesses
AIPG
This data brief provides insights from the recently released Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan dataset as it relates to geoscience businesses. Whereas the previous data brief examined trends in small businesses receiving PPP loans of over $150,000, this data brief examines trends in small businesses receiving PPP loans of up to $150,000. As of July 2020, 87% of PPP loan approvals for businesses were for loans up to $150,000 and comprised 28% of total PPP funding. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Small Business Pulse Survey showed the importance of PPP loans in helping businesses weather the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic by providing financial assistance to cover business operational expenses such as payroll, rent, utilities and interest on mortgages.

American Geosciences Institute releases 2020 Directory of Geoscience Departments
American Geosciences Institute
Directory of Geoscience Departments is the most comprehensive source of information about geoscience departments and researchers available. The directory is an invaluable resource for individuals working in the geosciences and all who identify or work with specialists on the issues of Earth, environment, and related fields in science and engineering.

This new edition provides a state- and country-sorted global listing of nearly 2,000 geoscience departments, research departments, and institutes, as well as over 18,000 faculty and staff. Contact information for departments and individuals is provided, as well as details on department enrollments, faculty specialties, and the date and source of faculty's and staff's highest degree. The directory includes a listing of all U.S. and Canadian geoscience theses and dissertations published in 2017 that have been reported to GeoRef Information Services, a listing of faculty by research specialty, information on specific programs and certificates offered by departments, and the availability of online courses.

For ordering, special shipping, bulk orders, and more information, email AGI Publications at pubs@americangeosciences.org.

Great Barrier Reef 'glue' at risk from ocean acidification
University of Sydney via ScienceDaily
The scaffolds that help hold together the world's tropical reefs are at risk from acidification due to increased carbon dioxide in the world's oceans, according to geoscientists at the University of Sydney. Extensive sampling of the Great Barrier Reef fossil record has shown that the calcified scaffolds that help stabilise and bind its structure become thin and weaker as pH levels fall. Scientists have seen incidental evidence for this in the past, but a new study led by Zsanett Szilagyi of the Geocoastal Research Group at the University of Sydney has shown that this is a global process, affecting reefs worldwide.

Strong magnitude 6.2 earthquake near coast of Central Chile on Sept. 6
Volcano Discovery
Another large earthquake hit Chile's western coast Sept. 6 at 9:16 p.m. local time. The quake was at 25 km depth and had its epicenter 12 km SE of Tongoy in the region of Coquimbo, 430 km north of Santiago. Strong shaking occurred on the ground in areas of up to 50 km distance from the epicenter, but light to weak shaking could be felt in a vast area up to several hundred kilometers distance. A similar, but stronger magnitude 7 quake had occurred five days earlier 266 km to the north.

A fluidization mechanism for secondary hydroeruptions in pyroclastic flow deposits
Frontiers in Earth Science
Heating of water under hot pyroclastic flow deposits can drive hydroeruptions, forming craters and aprons of secondary deposits. According to the established conceptual model, steam pressure builds until failure of the pyroclastic overburden and a relatively low permeability (fine-grained) cap promotes secondary explosions. We explore a complementary model where the stress from drag related to gas flow up through the particle interstices is comparable in magnitude to the static pressure difference between the base and the top of the pyroclastic flow deposit.

Unsupervised clustering of LA-ICP-MS raster map data for geological interpretation: A case study using epidote from the Yerington district, Nevada
Applied Computing and Geosciences
Raster element concentration maps created using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) can be used to interpret microscale compositional and textural domains within mineral grains. Raster maps are typically evaluated element by element; however, application of statistical techniques (such as cluster analysis) can enhance the generation of geochemical domains to support interpretation of growth zones, core-rim relationships, sector zones, and compositional-textural associations. Clustered LA-ICP-MS map data can be assessed within individual samples and between multiple samples, and can extend insight from the microscopic scale to the regional scale to better understand geological paragenesis of an area.

Rhyolites in continental mafic large igneous provinces: Petrology, geochemistry and petrogenesis
Geoscience Frontiers
We present a detailed review of the petrological and geochemical aspects of rhyolite and associated silicic volcanic rocks (up to 20 vol% of all rocks) reported to date from 12 well known Phanerozoic continental mafic Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs). These typically spread over ≤104 km2 (rarely 105 km2 for Paraná-Etendeka) area and comprise ≤104 km3 of extrusive silicic rocks, erupted either during or after the main basaltic eruption within <5 Myr, with some eruption(s) continuing for ≤30 Myr.
