AIPG Member Survey — Submit by Oct. 9
AIPG
AIPG is conducting a survey about “What is the value of AIPG?”. The purpose of this survey is to help direct AIPG leadership’s activities to best serve its membership and the geologic profession. We recognize that we must continually position ourselves to adapt to changes. This survey will be used to help identify the current needs of the organization and provide guidance to make positive changes.

We appreciate you taking some time to respond to the survey and to add comments to your response. Providing comments is optional but appreciated.

If you are interested in participating in a focus group, please keep an eye out for an announcement of a series of meetings that will provide a web-based meeting for smaller groups to actively participate in discussions.

You’ll be directed to the AIPG website where you’ll need to log in as a member. The system will allow you to submit only your survey only once. The last day to submit your survey is Oct. 9.

EGLE AIPG Michigan Section — Establishing Soil Background for Metals Webinar — Available on YouTube
AIPG
AIPG Michigan Section Virtual Forum Learning Series presents in partnership with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy Establishing Soil Background for Metals.

Did you know that if an approved soil background concentration for a hazardous substances is greater than a cleanup criterion, the criterion becomes the background concentration? Knowing the soil background concentrations for a facility/site can be a useful tool. Obtaining a soil background concentration for metals can be as simple as looking up the Michigan Statewide Default Background Level on the criteria tables. However, more methods to obtain background concentrations are available that can provide more flexibility. The objective of this webinar is to present different options to obtain soil background concentrations for a facility and to provide a better under-standing of what situations are appropriate to use a soil background concentration.

A 32-million year cycle detected in sea-level fluctuations over the last 545 Myr
Geoscience Frontiers
Spectral analyses of past relative sea-level oscillations as represented by the ages of 57 Phanerozoic (the last 545 Myr) stratigraphic sequence boundaries from the Canadian Arctic show a strong spectral peak at 32 Myr (>99.9% confidence). These findings concur with previous reports of significant cycles with periods of around 30 Myr in various records of fluctuations of sea level, and in potentially related episodes of tectonism, volcanism, climate and biotic extinctions.

Modern theory from ancient impacts
University of Tokyo via ScienceDaily
It is generally accepted that the inner region of the early solar system was subject to an intense period of meteoric bombardment referred to as the late heavy bombardment. However, researchers have found evidence that suggests this period occurred slightly earlier than thought and was less intense but also more prolonged. Such details about this period could impact theories about the early Earth and the dawn of life.

Seismic observations, numerical modeling, and geomorphic analysis of a glacier lake outburst flood in the Himalayas
ScienceAdvances
Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are a substantial hazard for downstream communities in vulnerable regions, yet unpredictable triggers and remote source locations make GLOF dynamics difficult to measure and quantify. Here, we revisit a destructive GLOF that occurred in Bhutan in 1994 and apply cross-correlation–based seismic analyses to track the evolution of the GLOF remotely (~100 kilometers from the source region).

A review of tsunami hazards in the Makran Subduction Zone
Geosciences
The uncertain tsunamigenic potential of the Makran Subduction Zone (MSZ) has made it an interesting natural laboratory for tsunami-related studies. This study aims to review the recent activities on tsunami hazard in the Makran subduction zone with a focus on deterministic and probabilistic tsunami hazard assessments.
