In Geoscience Currents #131, we examine the number of geoscience degrees, by type, in the United States in the academic year 2016-2017. Across all degree levels, the number of degrees awarded in the geosciences in the U.S. increased in the 2016-2017 academic year. The continued increase in bachelor's degrees reflects the rapid increase in geoscience enrollments earlier in the decade. The number of bachelor's degrees awarded increased 15 percent, master's degrees increased 13 percent and doctorates increased by almost 18 percent. At the graduate level, the accelerated throughput likely reflects the overall growth of enrollments at the bachelor's level propagating through the system. It may also reflect students who continued their education when hiring slowed during the most recent downturn in the energy industry. Please visit the Geoscience Currents webpage for more information.

Enrollments in U.S. geoscience programs remained relatively steady during the 2016-2017 academic year. Undergraduate enrollments have not substantially changed since 2012. However, a growing percentage of those undergraduate enrollments are in online degree programs, which have been offsetting enrollment declines particularly seen in private 4-year colleges and regional state universities. Following national trends observed across STEM fields in the past couple of years, geoscience graduate enrollment levels have declined 8 percent. Please visit the Geoscience Currents webpage for more information.

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) are pleased to announce the next Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI) webinar: "Techniques for Well Re-Development and Maintenance."
There is no magic method to clean a well. There are many techniques, some that have been used for decades, others are fairly recent. The objective of the re-development is to return the well to its condition when it was installed. We introduced the term Specific Capacity in an earlier session. We will demonstrate why measuring the Specific Capacity of your well is so important.
This 1-hour 20-minute webinar will take place on Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. EDT. Participants will earn 0.13 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through AIPG for attending the event.
The webinar will feature Raymond Talkington, Ph.D., P.G., C.P.G., Principal Hydrogeologist and President, GEOSPHERE Environmental Management, Inc., J. Theodore Morine, P.G., C.P.G., Senior Hydrogeologist and Vice President, Denis L. Maher Company, and Frank Getchell, P.G., C.P.G., Senior Supervising Hydrogeologist, WSP USA.
Please click here for more information about the webinar. You can register for the webinar here. Please contact AGI's Workforce Development Specialist Heather Houlton with any questions about AGI's GOLI offerings.

What's new for science educators and students heading back to school this fall? The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is excited to launch Education GeoSource, the most comprehensive collection of Earth science educational resources available online.
Unveiled just in time to help teachers prepare for Earth Science Week (Oct. 14-20), Education GeoSource provides Earth science educational activities, curricula, teacher professional development, education standards, virtual field trips, videos and animations, assessment materials, funding opportunities, award information, organization contacts and additional resources.
Education GeoSource (formerly the Education Resources Network) now boasts enhanced functionality, offers more than 3,500 resources, and is growing week by week. The website makes it easier than ever to find what you're seeking, for example, allowing users to search for activities by a given standard of the Next Generation Science Standards.
A major feature of AGI's Center for Geoscience & Society, the website's free geoscience education resources, curated from a variety of sources, are available with the click of a mouse or the tap of a finger. Join the up to 4,000 visitors a month who come to Education GeoSource to find useful resources.

Geology via MIT News
When a coastal tide rolls out, it can reveal beautiful ripples in the temporarily exposed sand. These same undulating patterns can also be seen in ancient, petrified seabeds that have been exposed in various parts of the world and preserved for millions or even billions of years.
Geologists look to ancient sand ripples for clues to the environmental conditions in which they formed. For instance, the spacing between ripples is proportional to the depth of the water and the size of the waves that molded the underlying ripples.

Recent thinning and loss of Antarctic ice shelves has been followed by near synchronous acceleration of ice flow that may eventually lead to sustained deflation and significant contraction in the extent of grounded and floating ice. Here, we present radiocarbon dates from foraminifera that constrain the time elapsed between a previously described paleo-ice-shelf collapse and the subsequent major grounding-line retreat in the Whales Deep Basin (WDB) of eastern Ross Sea.

Gravitational microlensing finds planets through their gravitational influence on the light coming from a more distant background star. The presence of the planet is then inferred from the tell-tale brightness variations of the background star during the lensing event, even if no light is detectable from the planet or the host foreground star. This review covers fundamental theoretical concepts in microlensing, addresses how observations are performed in practice, the challenges of obtaining accurate measurements and explains how planets reveal themselves in the data.

Earth, Planets and Space
Northeastern Turkey is located at the intensely deformed east Anatolian Collision Zone that is formed by the collision of the Arabian Plate with Eurasia. The region is one of the best examples of the continental collision zone in the world and exhibits an active north–south shortening and a young and widespread volcanism. In northeastern Anatolia, the ongoing motions of the Arabian and Eurasian Plates through a range of deformation processes have generated the Erzurum–Kars Plateau, a region of large-scale deformation and uplift observed at surface. However, the nature of deformation driven by the continental collision remains unresolved at depth.

The controlled outflows from a reservoir are highly dependent on the decisions made by the reservoir operators who mainly rely on available hydrologic information, such as past outflows, reservoir water level and forecasted inflows. In this study, Random Forests (RF) algorithm is used to build reservoir outflow simulation model to evaluate the value of hydrologic information.
