EGLE AIPG Michigan Section — Establishing Soil Background for Metals Webinar — Available on YouTube
AIPG
AIPG Michigan Section Virtual Forum Learning Series presents in partnership with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy Establishing Soil Background for Metals.
Did you know that if an approved soil background concentration for a hazardous substances is greater than a cleanup criterion, the criterion becomes the background concentration? Knowing the soil background concentrations for a facility/site can be a useful tool. Obtaining a soil background concentration for metals can be as simple as looking up the Michigan Statewide Default Background Level on the criteria tables. However, more methods to obtain background concentrations are available that can provide more flexibility. The objective of this webinar is to present different options to obtain soil background concentrations for a facility and to provide a better under-standing of what situations are appropriate to use a soil background concentration.

Geologists raise the speed limit for how fast continental crust can form
MIT News
Although we can’t see it in action, the Earth is constantly churning out new land. This takes place at subduction zones, where tectonic plates crush against each other and in the process plow up chains of volcanos that magma can rise through. Some of this magma does not spew out, but instead mixes and morphs just below the surface. It then crystallizes as new continental crust, in the form of a mountain range. Scientists have thought that the Earth’s mountain ranges are formed through this process over many millions of years. But MIT geologists have now found that the planet can generate new land far more quickly than previously thought.

A 32-million year cycle detected in sea-level fluctuations over the last 545 Myr
Geoscience Frontiers
Spectral analyses of past relative sea-level oscillations as represented by the ages of 57 Phanerozoic (the last 545 Myr) stratigraphic sequence boundaries from the Canadian Arctic show a strong spectral peak at 32 Myr (>99.9% confidence). These findings concur with previous reports of significant cycles with periods of around 30 Myr in various records of fluctuations of sea level, and in potentially related episodes of tectonism, volcanism, climate, and biotic extinctions.

Soil scientists report on conditions in five climatic zones
RUDN University via Phys.org
A team of soil scientists from RUDN University organized a summer school to study urban soils in 5 climatic zones. Students from Germany, Russia, China, and the U.S. spent two weeks analyzing the state of soils and vegetation in cities and towns all the way from the Barents to the Azov Sea. The results of their study confirmed the effect of urbanization on the soil such as decrease of soil acidity, increase of carbon concentrations, and shrinkage of tree trunks by 40% - 60%. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Environmental Quality.

Modeling of evaporation-driven multiple salt precipitation in porous media with a real field application
Geosciences
Soil and groundwater salinization are very important environmental issues of global concern. They threaten mainly the arid and semiarid regions characterized by dry climate conditions and an increase of irrigation practices. Among these regions, the south of Tunisia is considered, on the one hand, to be a salt-affected zone facing a twofold problem: The scarcity of water resources and the degradation of their quality due to the overexploitation of the aquifers for irrigation needs.

Precarious rocks help refine earthquake hazard in California
Science
Previous research on earthquake hazards has taken into account precariously balanced rocks, but this is the first study to use them to dramatically refine an entire hazard assessment, says Glenn Biasi, a seismologist at the U.S. Geological Survey who was not involved in the study. “This is going to be an important case study for how to approach the use of fragile geologic features,” he says.
