In Geoscience Currents #131, we examine the number of geoscience degrees, by type, in the United States in the academic year 2016-2017. Across all degree levels, the number of degrees awarded in the geosciences in the U.S. increased in the 2016-2017 academic year. The continued increase in bachelor's degrees reflects the rapid increase in geoscience enrollments earlier in the decade. The number of bachelor's degrees awarded increased 15 percent, master's degrees increased 13 percent and doctorates increased by almost 18 percent. At the graduate level, the accelerated throughput likely reflects the overall growth of enrollments at the bachelor's level propagating through the system. It may also reflect students who continued their education when hiring slowed during the most recent downturn in the energy industry. Please visit the Geoscience Currents webpage for more information.

Enrollments in U.S. geoscience programs remained relatively steady during the 2016-2017 academic year. Undergraduate enrollments have not substantially changed since 2012. However, a growing percentage of those undergraduate enrollments are in online degree programs, which have been offsetting enrollment declines particularly seen in private 4-year colleges and regional state universities. Following national trends observed across STEM fields in the past couple of years, geoscience graduate enrollment levels have declined 8 percent. Please visit the Geoscience Currents webpage for more information.

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) are pleased to announce the next Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI) webinar: "Techniques for Well Re-Development and Maintenance."
There is no magic method to clean a well. There are many techniques, some that have been used for decades, others are fairly recent. The objective of the re-development is to return the well to its condition when it was installed. We introduced the term Specific Capacity in an earlier session. We will demonstrate why measuring the Specific Capacity of your well is so important.
This 1-hour 20-minute webinar will take place on Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. EDT. Participants will earn 0.13 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through AIPG for attending the event.
The webinar will feature Raymond Talkington, Ph.D., P.G., C.P.G., Principal Hydrogeologist and President, GEOSPHERE Environmental Management, Inc., J. Theodore Morine, P.G., C.P.G., Senior Hydrogeologist and Vice President, Denis L. Maher Company, and Frank Getchell, P.G., C.P.G., Senior Supervising Hydrogeologist, WSP USA.

What's new for science educators and students heading back to school this fall? The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is excited to launch Education GeoSource, the most comprehensive collection of Earth science educational resources available online.
Unveiled just in time to help teachers prepare for Earth Science Week (Oct. 14-20), Education GeoSource provides Earth science educational activities, curricula, teacher professional development, education standards, virtual field trips, videos and animations, assessment materials, funding opportunities, award information, organization contacts and additional resources.
Education GeoSource (formerly the Education Resources Network) now boasts enhanced functionality, offers more than 3,500 resources, and is growing week by week. The website makes it easier than ever to find what you're seeking, for example, allowing users to search for activities by a given standard of the Next Generation Science Standards.
A major feature of AGI's Center for Geoscience & Society, the website's free geoscience education resources, curated from a variety of sources, are available with the click of a mouse or the tap of a finger. Join the up to 4,000 visitors a month who come to Education GeoSource to find useful resources.

Annual Membership Meeting Announcement
Please join us at the FR 8 House Kitchen and Tap, 200 S. Camino Del Pueblo, in Bernalillo, New Mexico at 11:00 for our annual membership meeting.
Please consider nominations for the Treasurer and Vice President positions. Send them by email to John Sorrell and he will share them with the Executive Committee and a ballot will be sent out on or about Nov. 1.
We will continue to work toward developing a five year plan and attempt to implement a one year plan. Information from the National Convention recently held in Colorado will be given. We also would like to establish a student liaison committee to continue the development of Earth Science professionals from New Mexico institutions of higher learning, like has been established in Socorro.
This will be the business meeting we need to continue to move our section forward to benefit our membership. We will be presenting information about National resources and efforts being made to work closely with AGI and others to benefit our profession.
Please contact John Sorrell with any nominations you may have for the aforementioned open positions, Vice President and Treasure. An announcement of the successful election of the new officers for President Elect (Vice President) and Treasurer will be made.

A multiyear study has uncovered evidence that a 21-mile-long (34-kilometer-long) section of a fault links known, longer faults in southern California and northern Mexico into a much longer continuous system. The entire system is at least 217 miles (350 kilometers) long.

Advances in Geo-Energy Research
Extracting heat energy from geothermal reservoirs essentially relies on circulating cold fluid within fractured hot rocks. The intrinsic anisotropic permeability in the reservoir directly affects the path of flow and the associated thermal drawdown from cooling procedure. Consequently, each individual component including thermal, hydraulic and mechanical field needs to be considered, to evaluate the influence of permeability anisotropy on the thermal production and evolution of rock properties.

High-latitude, small-scale plasma density irregularities are observed by the Advanced Land Observation Satellite 2, Phase Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 and the European Incoherent Scatter radar in Tromsø, Norway. Under high levels of ionization of up to approximately 300 km in height triggered by nighttime particle precipitation, high-resolution SAR images detect horizontal distributions of azimuth shifts resulting from the spatial gradients of electron density.

The floodwaters that covered wide swaths of the Carolinas' coastal plain are finally receding, more than two weeks after Hurricane Florence made landfall Sept. 14 near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, and U.S. Geological Survey hydrographers are moving in rapidly to the areas where the flooding lingered longest. About 30 flood experts are in the second week of a high water mark campaign, traveling from one hard-hit community to the next, searching neighborhood by neighborhood and sometimes door to door for physical evidence of flooding.

Local gravity field modelling demands high-quality gravity data as well as an appropriate mathematical model. Particularly in coastal areas, there may be different types of gravity observations available, for instance, terrestrial, aerial, marine gravity and satellite altimetry data. Thus, it is important to develop a proper tool to merge the different data types for local gravity field modelling and determination of the geoid.

Hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts on Pacific seamounts are formed by the precipitation of iron–manganese oxides from seawater on volcanic and biogenic substrate rocks. As crusts grow continuously and have very slow growth rates of between 1 and 10 mm/m.y., they can potentially be used as records of the Neogene paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic conditions.
