CEUs available — AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI)
AIPG and American Geosciences Institute
GOLI on-demand online courses provide learners with the flexibility to self-pace their progress, since on-demand courses do not have a set schedule like traditional academic semester-based courses. Brought to you via the OpenedX Learning Management System (LMS), learners are able to browse course descriptions, enroll in specific courses, access content, and complete any course completely free of charge. All learners who complete online courses offered through the GOLI platform with a passing grade of 70% or higher are eligible to purchase Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for a nominal charge.

EGLE AIPG Michigan Section — Establishing Soil Background for Metals Webinar — Available on YouTube
AIPG
AIPG Michigan Section Virtual Forum Learning Series presents in partnership with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy Establishing Soil Background for Metals.
Did you know that if an approved soil background concentration for a hazardous substances is greater than a cleanup criterion, the criterion becomes the background concentration? Knowing the soil background concentrations for a facility/site can be a useful tool. Obtaining a soil background concentration for metals can be as simple as looking up the Michigan Statewide Default Background Level on the criteria tables. However, more methods to obtain background concentrations are available that can provide more flexibility. The objective of this webinar is to present different options to obtain soil background concentrations for a facility and to provide a better under-standing of what situations are appropriate to use a soil background concentration.

Investigating the geochemical controls on Pb bioaccessibility in urban agricultural soils to inform sustainable site management
Geosciences
The solid-phase speciation of contaminants in soil plays a major role in regulating both the environmental mobility of contaminants and their bioavailability in biological receptors such as humans. With the increasing prevalence of urban agriculture, in tandem with growing evidence of the negative health impacts of even low levels of exposure to Pb, there is a pressing need to provide regulators with a relevant evidence base on which to build human health risk assessments and construct sustainable site management plans. We detail how the solid-phase fractionation of Pb from selected urban agricultural soil samples, using sequential extraction, can be utilised to interpret the bioaccessible fraction of Pb and ultimately inform sustainable site management plans.

Asteroid Bennu may have been home to ancient water flows
MIT Technology Review
Ahead of an Oct. 20 attempt to bring extraterrestrial rocks from an asteroid called Bennu to Earth, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission has delivered new insights into its chemistry and geology.
Bennu, currently over 321 million kilometers from Earth, was chosen for study because it’s a carbonaceous chondritic rock — rich in organics, and thought to have formed in the early, oxygen-rich days of the solar system. Understanding Bennu’s physical composition, and how it was carved into its 500-meter-long shape, can help us understand how asteroids were formed back then, and what the solar system was like in its infancy.

Unveiling Powell Basin's tectonic domains and understanding its abnormal magnetic anomaly signature. Is heat the key?
Frontiers in Earth Science
Rifting of continental lithosphere leading to oceanic basins is a complex process conditioned by different factors such as the rheology and thermal structure of the underlying lithosphere, as well as underlying asthenospheric dynamics. All these processes, which finally lead to oceanic domains, can better be recognized in small oceanic basins. Powell Basin was formed between the Oligocene and Miocene, however, its age is not well defined.

Earth grows fine gems in minutes
Rice University via ScienceDaily
Rome wasn't built in a day, but some of Earth's finest gemstones were, according to new research from Rice University. Some of Earth's finest gemstones grew in a matter of minutes. Geologists made that discovery while investigating mineral formations that are rich in lithium and rare metals.
