MonoShield is a chemically resistant and easy-to-apply vapor barrier designed as a preemptive solution for vapor intrusion at brownfield redevelopment sites. At a contaminated opportunity zone site that was being developed into a 650,000 square foot warehouse, MonoShield offered a reliable, cost-effective solution to address vapor intrusion. On a map, submarine canyons seem identical to land canyons — so much so that researchers surmised they are shaped by the same physical laws. New research reveals distinct differences for the first time.

While sorting throughthe gems freshly unearthed in Yakutia, Russia, specialists working with the mining company ALROSA stumbled across something they'd never seen before: a tiny diamond entombed in the belly of a larger diamond. The so-called matryoshka diamond, named after Russian nesting dolls, weighs a mere 0.124 grams, and the outer gem is about as wide as a grain of rice is long, according to ALROSA's announcement about the find.

Despite landslide inventories being compiled throughout the world every year at different scales, limited efforts have been made to critically compare them using various techniques or by different investigators. Event-based landslide inventories indicate the location, distribution and detected boundaries of landslides caused by a single event, such as an earthquake or a rainstorm. Event-based landslide inventories are essential for landslide susceptibility mapping, hazard modeling and further management of risk mitigation.

According to the Anales de Tlatelolco, the earth cracked open in central Mexico on Feb. 19, 1575. The ancient codex, composed around the time the Aztec Empire fell to Spanish conquistadors, features a story of a convulsion that lasted for up to five days, creating landslides and opening up a nearly three-mile-long scar in the ground. This tale of earth-shattering catastrophe is part of a newly uncovered series of scientifically undocumented earthquakes that took place over the past 450 years in Mexico, seismologists report in a recent issue of the journal Tectonics.

Mars was a very different place as a young planet. Liquid water dotted the Red Planet's landscape with lakes and rivers. But the planet's climate changed drastically in the past few billion years. Today, scientists see the remains of the planet's bodies of water in dried-up river channels and salts left in its rocks.
Now, new data from the Curiosity rover show that the planet’s waters were evaporating about 3.5 billion years ago.

The stability of man-made underground cavities in soft rocks interacting with overlying structures and infrastructures represents a challenging problem to be faced. Based upon the results of a large number of parametric two-dimensional (2-D) finite-element analyses of ideal cases of underground cavities, accounting for the variability both cave geometrical features and rock mechanical properties, specific charts have been recently proposed in the literature to assess at a preliminary stage the stability of the cavities.

Primary production on the coast and in Greenland fjords sustains important local and sustenance fisheries. However, unprecedented melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) is impacting the coastal ocean, and its effects on fjord ecology remain understudied. It has been suggested that as glaciers retreat, primary production regimes may be altered, rendering fjords less productive. Here we investigate patterns of primary productivity in a northeast Greenland fjord, which receives run-off from the GrIS via land-terminating glaciers.

A new study evaluates the accuracy of a commonly used numerical model in hydrology.
Findings from the research show that even when the model appears to be properly calibrated, its results can be difficult to interpret correctly. The study, published in the Journal of Hydrology, provides recommendations for how to fine-tune the process and obtain more precise results.
