Foundation of the AIPG
It is that time of year. As you review your dues statement for 2019 and look at end-of-the-year donations, please take the opportunity to include a donation to the Foundation of the American Institute of Professional Geologists. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization so your donation is eligible for a deduction on your taxes. We ask that you support the Foundation with monetary contributions that would be used primarily to fund our scholarship and young professional initiatives, and other Foundation programs as well. The Foundation relies on the support of generous individual and corporate or group donors for financial contributions or gifts in kind.

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) are pleased to announce the next Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI) webinar: "Techniques for Well Re-Development and Maintenance."
There is no magic method to clean a well. There are many techniques, some that have been used for decades, others are fairly recent. The objective of the re-development is to return the well to its condition when it was installed. We introduced the term Specific Capacity in an earlier session. We will demonstrate why measuring the Specific Capacity of your well is so important.
This 1-hour 20-minute webinar will take place on Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. EDT. Participants will earn 0.13 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through AIPG for attending the event.
The webinar will feature Raymond Talkington, Ph.D., P.G., C.P.G., Principal Hydrogeologist and President, GEOSPHERE Environmental Management, Inc., J. Theodore Morine, P.G., C.P.G., Senior Hydrogeologist and Vice President, Denis L. Maher Company, and Frank Getchell, P.G., C.P.G., Senior Supervising Hydrogeologist, WSP USA.

The Arizona Section of AIPG is sponsoring a full-day workshop for university students and young professionals on Oct. 23 as part of the AIMMGM Sonora District conference in Hermosillo, Sonora. AIMMGM is a Mexican professional association of mining engineers, geologists, metallurgists and other professionals involved in mining. The workshop will be multi-disciplinary, although most of the presenters will be geologists. Arizona section members Stewart Hall and Dawn Garcia have organized the event after being inspired by the student activities at the AIPG National meeting in September 2017 in Nashville.

Annual Membership Meeting Announcement
Please join us at the FR 8 House Kitchen and Tap, 200 S. Camino Del Pueblo, in Bernalillo, New Mexico at 11:00 for our annual membership meeting.
Please consider nominations for the Treasurer and Vice President positions. Send them by email to John Sorrell and he will share them with the Executive Committee and a ballot will be sent out on or about Nov. 1.
We will continue to work toward developing a five year plan and attempt to implement a one year plan. Information from the National Convention recently held in Colorado will be given. We also would like to establish a student liaison committee to continue the development of Earth Science professionals from New Mexico institutions of higher learning, like has been established in Socorro.
This will be the business meeting we need to continue to move our section forward to benefit our membership. We will be presenting information about National resources and efforts being made to work closely with AGI and others to benefit our profession.
Please contact John Sorrell with any nominations you may have for the aforementioned open positions, Vice President and Treasure. An announcement of the successful election of the new officers for President Elect (Vice President) and Treasurer will be made.

Frontiers in Earth Science
Magmatic degassing, typically measured as SO2 flux, plays a fundamental role in controlling volcanic eruption style and is one of the key parameters used by volcano observatories to assess volcanic unrest and detect eruption precursors. Volcanic tremor, the integrated amplitude of seismic energy release over a range of frequencies, is also a key parameter in volcano monitoring. A connection between volcanic degassing and tremor has been inferred through correlations between the signals which are often, but not always, observed during periods of unrest or eruption.

We present a new method for gravity data inversion for the linear problem (reconstruction of density distribution by given gravity field). This is an iteration algorithm based on the ideas of local minimization (also known as local corrections method). Unlike the gradient methods, it does not require a nonlinear minimization, is easier to implement and has better stability. The algorithm is based on the finite element method.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos recently announced the deployment of new materials to enhance marine habitat at the Fire Island Reef, Moriches Reef and Hempstead Reef as part of the state's ongoing efforts to develop a stronger, more diverse marine ecosystem and provide shelter for fish and other marine life off New York's shores.

Planning community resilience to sea level rise (SLR) requires information about where, when, and how SLR hazards will impact the coastal zone. We augment passive flood mapping (the so-called "bathtub" approach) by simulating physical processes posing recurrent threats to coastal infrastructure, communities, and ecosystems in Hawaii (including tidally-forced direct marine and groundwater flooding, seasonal wave inundation and chronic coastal erosion).

The mothership of the Japanese probe Hayabusa2 will make its first touchdown on the Ryugu asteroid in January, instead of this month as originally planned.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's mission team has determined that the asteroid's surface is rougher than expected and has decided to take more time to plan the landing, according to a statement JAXA published on Oct. 14. This part of the mission — which will collect a sample of the asteroid to be brought back to Earth — is the most important, but also the riskiest.

Ganymede was shaped by pronounced periods of tectonic activity in the past, according to a new paper. It's no longer active and its surface is more-or-less frozen in place now. But this discovery opens the door to better planning for future missions to Jupiter's other frozen moon Europa. Unlike Ganymede, Europa is still tectonically active, and understanding past geological activity on Ganymede helps us understand present-day Europa.

The micropaleontological study (radiolarians and foraminifera) of the sediment core AMK-340, Reykjanes Ridge, North Atlantic, combined with the radiocarbon dating and oxygen and carbon isotopic record, provided data for the reconstruction of the summer paleotemperature across the upper 100 meters water depth range, and paleoenvironments during the Termination I in the age interval of 14.5–8 ka.

Deep-water areas have become a hotspot for global hydrocarbon exploration. In the deep-water area of the Northern South China Sea, a complete set of source rocks, reservoir rocks, and caprock represents a good oil and gas exploration prospect. The Pearl River Mouth basin, an important exploration target in this area, has a wide range of geothermal gradients. However, the mechanism by which the geothermal gradient influences reservoir quality remains unclear, which severely restricts future exploration.
