CEUs available — AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI)
AIPG and American Geosciences Institute
GOLI on-demand online courses provide learners with the flexibility to self-pace their progress, since on-demand courses do not have a set schedule like traditional academic semester-based courses. Brought to you via the OpenedX Learning Management System (LMS), learners are able to browse course descriptions, enroll in specific courses, access content, and complete any course completely free of charge. All learners who complete online courses offered through the GOLI platform with a passing grade of 70% or higher are eligible to purchase Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for a nominal charge.

EGLE AIPG Michigan Section — Establishing Soil Background for Metals Webinar — Available on YouTube
AIPG
AIPG Michigan Section Virtual Forum Learning Series presents in partnership with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy Establishing Soil Background for Metals.
Did you know that if an approved soil background concentration for a hazardous substances is greater than a cleanup criterion, the criterion becomes the background concentration? Knowing the soil background concentrations for a facility/site can be a useful tool. Obtaining a soil background concentration for metals can be as simple as looking up the Michigan Statewide Default Background Level on the criteria tables. However, more methods to obtain background concentrations are available that can provide more flexibility. The objective of this webinar is to present different options to obtain soil background concentrations for a facility and to provide a better under-standing of what situations are appropriate to use a soil background concentration.

AGI diversity in the geosciences
AIPG
This data brief encourages thought and conversation around the retention of women and minorities within the geoscience workforce. We examine participation rates of women and minorities in geoscience academic programs, geoscience occupations, as well as the occupational pathways of those with geoscience degrees. We also compare trends within the geosciences to other science and engineering disciplines as well as to U.S. population demographics to better understand the existing retention issues within the geosciences as well as within other science and engineering professions.

Responding to societal needs with 3-D geology: An international perspective
AIPG
The Geological Survey of Canada, Illinois State Geological Survey, British Geological Survey, Alberta Geological Survey, Minnesota Geological Survey, and TNO, Geological Survey of the Netherlands have organized a two-part webinar series on how Geological Survey Organizations (GSOs) have been helping society face economic and environmental challenges for over 150 years. The technological transformation of geoscience is presenting new opportunities for GSOs, and the wider geoscience community, to respond to the societal challenges of our time, and lay the foundation for a sustainable future. Three-dimensional geological modelling is providing a valuable tool for informed decision making and risk reduction – from planning urban infrastructure, managing ground water resources, and sourcing renewable energy. To capitalize on this capability, new data infrastructures are required to share and integrate information across government and the private sector.
This two-part webinar series will feature leaders in the field, presenting the latest developments, and will be of interest to students, academics, private sector practitioners, and other government agencies.

Geological Society of Nevada Symposium, with Pre- and Post-Meeting Field Trips and Short Courses — May 17-20, 2021
AIPG
The Geological Society of Nevada will host its eighth symposium May 17-20, 2021, in the scenic Reno/Lake Tahoe region of northern Nevada. Symposia are held every five years and draw an international audience from the minerals industry, government and universities. GSN symposia are the preeminent regional venue combining geology and exploration in the U.S. The 2021 theme, Vision for Discovery, emphasizes the goal of science to explore and make new discoveries in the Basin and Range province.

Climate controls on erosion in tectonically active landscapes
Science Advances
The ongoing debate about the nature of coupling between climate and tectonics in mountain ranges derives, in part, from an imperfect understanding of how topography, climate, erosion, and rock uplift are interrelated. Here, we demonstrate that erosion rate is nonlinearly related to fluvial relief with a proportionality set by mean annual rainfall. These relationships can be quantified for tectonically active landscapes, and calculations based on them enable estimation of erosion where observations are lacking.

Equatorial mountains on Pluto are covered by methane frosts resulting from a unique atmospheric process
Nature Communications
Pluto is covered by numerous deposits of methane, either diluted in nitrogen or as methane-rich ice. Within the dark equatorial region of Cthulhu, bright frost containing methane is observed coating crater rims and walls as well as mountain tops, providing spectacular resemblance to terrestrial snow-capped mountain chains. However, the origin of these deposits remained enigmatic. Here we report that they are composed of methane-rich ice.

Tsunami warning canceled following 7.5 magnitude earthquake off Alaska Peninsula
Anchorage Daily News
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit off the Alaska Peninsula coast Monday afternoon and triggered a tsunami warning for communities along hundreds of miles of coastline. The warning was cancelled after about three hours, but communities had evacuated to higher ground during the chaos.
The quake’s epicenter was in the North Pacific Ocean about 55 miles southeast of Sand Point at 12:54 p.m. and had a depth of 25 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The area is about 575 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Natural nanodiamonds in oceanic rocks
University of Barcelona via Phys.org
Natural diamonds can form through low pressure and temperature geological processes on Earth, as stated in an article published in the journal Geochemical Perspectives Letters. The newfound mechanism, far from the classic view on the formation of diamonds under ultra-high pressure, is confirmed in the study, which draws on the participation of experts from the Mineral Resources Research Group of the Faculty of Earth Sciences of the University of Barcelona (UB).

The magnitude of the 39.8 ka Campanian Ignimbrite eruption, Italy: Method, uncertainties and errors
Frontiers in Earth Science
The calculation of the magnitude of an eruption needs the accurate estimate of its deposit volume. This is particularly critical for ignimbrites as no methods for their volume calculations and associated errors and uncertainties are consolidated in the literature, although invariably the largest magnitude eruptions on Earth are made of ignimbrites. The 39.8 ka Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) eruption is the largest of the Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy).
