Resources for Future Generations 2018
What happens when you bring industry, government, First Nations representatives, policy-makers academics, scientists and members of civil society together? It may sound like a strange mixer, but Resources for Future Generations 2018 (RFG2018) recognizes that in order to have a meaningful conversation about the use of Earth's resources in the future, all the voices must be in the room.
In order to enrich the conversation, RFG2018 has unveiled what looks to be a robust, comprehensive list of sessions structured around their six central themes: The Earth, Water, Minerals, Energy, Resources and Society, and Education and Knowledge. You can review a full list of Theme Sessions.
Call for Abstracts to RFG2018 sessions is now open. Abstracts will be accepted until Jan. 15, and we encourage you to add your voice to this event.

Geoscience Frontiers
The six largest known impact craters of the last 250 Myr (at least 70 km in diameter), which are capable of causing significant environmental damage, coincide with four times of recognized extinction events at 36 (with two craters), 66 and 145 Myr ago, and possibly with two provisional extinction events at 168 and 215 Myr ago. These impact cratering events are accompanied by layers in the geologic record interpreted as impact ejecta. Chance occurrences of impacts and extinctions can be rejected at confidence levels of 99.96 percent (for four impact/extinctions) to 99.99 percent (for six impact/extinctions). These results argue that several extinction events over the last 250 Myr may be related to the effects of large-body impacts.

Gorely is an active volcano located 75 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka. In 2010–2015, it exhibited strong activity expressed by anomalously high gas emission. In 2013–2014, we deployed a temporary network consisting of 20 temporary seismic stations that operated for one year. We selected 333 events with 1613 P-wave and 2421 S-wave arrival times to build the first tomographic model of this volcano. The seismic model was carefully verified using a series of synthetic tests.

Microseismic monitoring from ground surface is applied in the development of hard-to-recover reserves, especially in the process of hydraulic fracturing. This paper compares several methods of HF microseismic monitoring from the surface, including diffraction stacking, time reverse modeling and spectral methods.

Cold and heat waves represent a significant problem for the electricity generation sector. The disruptions cold and heat waves can cause in power production are beyond their consumption impacts through, for instance, higher peak demand. Unexpected stops at thermal or nuclear power plants by excessively high-temperature water constitute clear examples of this. In this invited paper, we use past case studies to analyze the impact of these kinds of events on power production.

Hydrology
Soil moisture is placed at the interface between land and atmosphere, which influences water and energy flux. However, soil moisture information has a significant importance in hydrological modeling and environmental processes. Recent advances in acquiring soil moisture from the satellite and its effective utilization provide an alternative to the conventional soil moisture methods. In this study, an attempt is made to apply physically based, distributed-parameter, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to validate Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR2) soil moisture in parts of Puerto Rico.

We study the influence of bottom topography on the interaction of two identical vortices in a two-layer, quasi-geostrophic model. The two vortices have piecewise-uniform potential vorticity and are lying in the upper layer of the model. The topography is a smooth bottom slope. For two cyclones, topography modifies the merger critical distance and the merger efficiency: the topographic wave and vortices can advect the two cyclones along the shelf when they are initially far from it or towards the shelf when they are initially closer to it.
