Responding to societal needs with 3-D geology: An international perspective
AIPG
The Geological Survey of Canada, Illinois State Geological Survey, British Geological Survey, Alberta Geological Survey, Minnesota Geological Survey, and TNO, Geological Survey of the Netherlands have organized a two-part webinar series on how Geological Survey Organizations (GSOs) have been helping society face economic and environmental challenges for over 150 years. The technological transformation of geoscience is presenting new opportunities for GSOs, and the wider geoscience community, to respond to the societal challenges of our time, and lay the foundation for a sustainable future. Three-dimensional geological modelling is providing a valuable tool for informed decision making and risk reduction – from planning urban infrastructure, managing ground water resources, and sourcing renewable energy. To capitalize on this capability, new data infrastructures are required to share and integrate information across government and the private sector.
This two-part webinar series will feature leaders in the field, presenting the latest developments, and will be of interest to students, academics, private sector practitioners, and other government agencies.

Geologists find magma 'conveyor belt' that fueled earth's longest supervolcano burst
Science Alert
A subterranean "conveyor belt" of magma, pushing up to Earth's surface for millions of years, was responsible for the longest stretch of erupting supervolcanoes ever seen on the planet, according to new research. Shifts in the seabed caused channels to form, through which the magma could flow freely, researchers say. This resulted in an extensive period of eruptions lasting from around 122 million years ago to 90 million years ago; exceptional, considering that typically these types of flows lasted just 1-5 million years.

Multi-hazard portfolio loss estimation for time-dependent shaking and tsunami hazards
Frontiers in Earth Science
This study presents an innovative computational framework for conducting a time-dependent multi-hazard loss estimation of a building portfolio subjected to megathrust subduction earthquakes and tsunamis. The earthquake occurrence is represented by a set of multiple renewal models, which are implemented using a logic-tree approach, whereas earthquake rupture characterization is based on stochastic source models with variable fault geometry and heterogeneous slip distribution.

A 520-million-year-old, five-eyed fossil reveals arthropod origin
Chinese Academy of Sciences via Phys.org
Arthropods have been among the most successful animals on Earth since the Cambrian Period, about 520 million years ago. They are the most familiar and ubiquitous, and constitute nearly 80% of all animal species today, far more than any other animals. But how did arthropods evolve, and what did their ancestors look like? These have been a major conundrum in animal evolution puzzling generations of scientists for more than a century. Now, researchers have discovered a shrimp-like fossil with five eyes, which has provided important insights into the early evolutionary history of arthropods. The study was published in Nature on Nov. 4.

Rhode Island experiences coastline water contamination
Water Quality Products
Drinking water wells at homes along the Rhode Island coastline are being contaminated by saltwater.
Since sea levels are rising and storm surges are increasing, many more wells are likely at risk.
A team of University of Rhode Island researchers is conducting a series of geophysical tests to determine the extent of this issue.
