AIPG
The Foundation of the American Institute of Professional Geologists supports a variety of programs of the American Institute of Professional Geologists that include student scholarships, educational programs aimed at practitioners, the public and policymakers and, on occasion, some special needs requested by AIPG. The Foundation is engaged in exclusively educational, scholarship and research programs. The Foundation may also support public information forums, public education meetings, teacher seminars and geological seminars for other professionals such as engineers, architects, planners and others; thus coordinating the expertise of several professions for a better understanding of the geosciences and global issues. The Foundation is proud to be able to serve AIPG and the geosciences by providing financial support for these programs.
We ask that you continue supporting the Foundation with monetary contributions that would be used primarily to fund our scholarship and young professional initiatives, and other Foundation programs as they develop. The Foundation relies on the support of generous individual and corporate or group donors for financial contributions or gifts in kind. Information about donations is on the Foundation webpage of the AIPG website. You may donate online or send your donation check by mail to: Foundation of AIPG, 12000 Washington St., Suite 285, Thornton, CO 80241-3134.
Thank you for your support of the Foundation so the Foundation may support AIPG and the geosciences. Your continued interest and support is greatly appreciated.
Barbara Murphy, CPG, Chairperson, Foundation of AIPG

This technique provides the contaminant distribution on the 6 in. to 3 ft scale, as desired. It's obtained by diffusion of the dissolved phase into an activated carbon felt strip pressed against the wall by a flexible liner in a sealed borehole.

Solid Earth Sciences
Plate tectonics is taken as one of the four major breakthroughs in natural sciences in the 20th century, sitting alongside the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics and molecular biology. But, after 50 years of intensive study, two fundamental questions remain unsolved: What is the main driving force of plate tectonics, and, how did plate tectonics get started? Both of these questions are related to the initiation of subduction, which is a more difficult issue to constrain than an initiation of plate spreading.

In this paper, an updated Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method based on the Simplified Finite Difference Interpolation scheme (SPH_SFDI) is presented to simulate the failure process of ice. The Drucker–Prager model is embedded into the SPH code to simulate the four point bending and uniaxial compression failure of ice. The cohesion softening elastic–plastic model is also used in the SPH_SFDI framework. To validate the proposed modeling approach, the numerical results of SPH_SFDI are compared with the standard SPH and the experimental data.

The impact of door opening on cave carbon dioxide levels was studied in the Entrance Chamber and the Gallery Chamber of the Balcarka Cave (Moravian Karst, Czech Republic). The effect of door opening differed with cave ventilation modes. Under upward airflow mode, the cave door opening led to the increase of output advective CO2 fluxes from the cave and to the decrease of CO2 levels.

Elementa: Science of the Antropocene
A recent paradigm shift from purely biophysical towards social-ecological assessment of watersheds has been proposed to understand, monitor and manipulate the myriad interactions between human well-being and the ecosystem services that watersheds provide. However, large-scale, quantitative studies in this endeavour remain limited. We utilized two newly developed "big-data" sets to explore the social-ecological condition of watersheds throughout the conterminous U.S., and identified environmental and socio-economic influences on watershed integrity and human well-being.

The mechanism and kinetics of the reduction of hematite to magnetite in a laboratory-scale, micro-fluidized bed reactor were isothermally investigated. The procedure consisted of the isothermal heating in a flow of a 20 percent CO to 80 percent CO2 mixture at temperatures from 500-600 degrees Celsius.

Recent developments have emphasized the global impacts of climate change and have renewed commitments in renewable energy and energy meteorology. Wind energy depends largely on prevailing meteorological conditions on both local and large scales, thus, wind power optimization should aid its assessment and development. This study uses ERA-Interim daily data from 1979 to 2014 to investigate the impact of the East Asian Monsoon on wind power in Asia.
