This technique provides the contaminant distribution on the 6 in. to 3 ft scale, as desired. It's obtained by diffusion of the dissolved phase into an activated carbon felt strip pressed against the wall by a flexible liner in a sealed borehole.

The future will be collaborative or it won't be. That is a certainty for INTRAW. Not just a simple belief that our future would look brighter if Europe collaborated with International Partners, but an actual, deep faith: There is no Future for the EU without close collaboration among the strong mining countries from across the globe.

American Geosciences Institute
The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is accepting applications for the 2018 Edward C. Roy, Jr. Award for Excellence in Earth Science Teaching.
Given annually, this award is presented to one teacher of grades K-8 in the United States or Key Stages 1-3 in the United Kingdom each year. The award recognizes leadership and innovation in Earth science education.
The winner of the Edward C. Roy Award will receive a cash prize and an additional travel grant to attend the National Science Teachers Association Annual Conference in Atlanta in March 2018. To be eligible, applications must be submitted by Jan. 22.
The Edward C. Roy Award is given in honor of Dr. Edward C. Roy, Jr., a strong and dedicated supporter of Earth science education. A past president of AGI and former chair of the AGI Education Advisory Committee, Roy was a lifelong supporter of teachers and students of all ages.

Sedimentary rocks cover approximately 73 percent of the Earth's surface and metamorphic rocks account for nearly 91 percent of the crust by volume. Understanding the average behavior and variability of heat production for these rock types are vitally important for developing accurate models of lithospheric temperature. We analyze the heat production of approximately 204,000 whole rock geochemical analyses to quantify how heat production of these rocks varies with respect to chemistry and their evolution during metamorphism.

Thermal remote sensing is currently an emerging technique for monitoring active volcanoes around the world. The study area, the Aso volcano, is currently the most active and has erupted almost every year since 2012. For the first time, Landsat 8 TIRS thermal data were used in this study area to evaluate and monitor the recent thermal status of this volcano, situated in Southwest Japan, from 2013 to 2016 using four sets of images.

An effective correction method for stereological bias is required because of the importance of accurate assessment of mineral liberation of ore particles. Stereological bias is error caused by the estimation of a three-dimensional liberation state based on two-dimensional sectional measurements. Recent studies have proposed a stereological correction method based on sectional particle texture analysis, which employs numerical particle models. However, the applicability of this method to unfamiliar particle systems, with different shape and texture characteristics from the numerical particle model, has not been thoroughly investigated.

U.S. Geological Survey
The U.S. Geological Survey estimates a mean of 40 million pounds of in-place uranium oxide remaining as potential undiscovered resources in the Southern High Plains region of Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The uranium occurs in a type of rock formation called "calcrete," which has been well-documented in noted uranium-producing countries like Australia and Namibia. The calcrete formations described in this assessment are the first uranium-bearing calcrete deposits reported in the United States.

Journal of Hydrology and Hydromechanics
The identification of the moment when direct flow ends and baseflow begins is one of the biggest challenges of hydrological cycle modeling. The objectives of this research were to characterize the recession curves (RC) and to separate the components of the hydrograph in a compact model.

Petrified wood has traditionally been divided into two categories based on preservation processes: permineralization (where tissues are entombed within a mineral-filled matrix) and replacement (where organic anatomical features have been replicated by inorganic materials). New analytical evidence suggests that for most petrified wood, permineralization and replacement are not independent processes; instead, both processes may occur contemporaneously during diagenesis. Infiltration of mineral-bearing groundwater may initially cause permineralization of cellular tissues, but the wood is undergoing gradual degradation.

Sedimentary Geology
The Colorado River in the Southwestern U.S. provides an excellent natural laboratory for studying the origins of a continent-scale river system, because deposits that formed prior to and during river initiation are well exposed in the lower river valley and nearby basinal sink. This paper presents a synthesis of regional stratigraphy, sedimentology and micropaleontology from the southern Bouse Formation and similar-age deposits in the western Salton Trough, which we use to interpret processes that controlled the birth and early evolution of the Colorado River.

Water
The partitioning of precipitation into frozen and liquid components influences snow-derived water resources and flood hazards in mountain environments. We used a 915-MHz Doppler radar wind profiler upstream of the Northern Sierra Nevada to estimate the hourly elevation where snow melts to rain, or the snow level, during winter (December–February) precipitation events spanning water years (WY) 2008–2017.
