New Historian
A lost island, home to the ancient Greek city of Kane, has been found, and a longstanding mystery solved. The newly discovered island located in the Aegean province of Izmir's Dikili district in Turkey is one of three islands ancient texts refer to as the Arginus islands. The other two islands still exist and are referred to jointly as the Garip Islands. Although located in the same area, until this discovery experts were uncertain the Garip Islands were in fact part of the Arginus Islands, because of the missing third island.

A portion of the central Pacific Ocean registered its warmest water on record for a single week, a further signal that weather troublemaker El Niño is approaching record territory.
Sea water in the region soared over the past week to a temperature of about 85.5 degrees, more than 5 degrees above average, according to meteorologist Jan Null of Golden Gate Weather Services.

Science News for Students
Microscopic vampires may have prowled ancient seas some 750 million years ago. Scientists have found the fossilized remains of their punctured victims. Those fossils may be the oldest direct evidence of predators hunting eukaryotes. This domain of complex life includes both plants and animals. The monstrous microbes probably didn't look like tiny Count Draculas. But, "they're just as terrifying, at least if you're a single-celled organism," said Susannah Porter, a paleontologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

This is a half-day workshop was developed to provide water utility personnel, engineers, hydrogeologists, regulatory officials and other interested persons in understanding about the sand and gravel and bedrock aquifers their wells are located in and how and why well performance declines over time along with options that are available to rehabilitate your well. The workshop begins with an introduction of the geology and aquifers of New England. From plate tectonics to glacial geology along the effects of weathering that have created the majority of high-yield aquifers located throughout New England. A quick trip through well types, water well terminology, groundwater flow into well screens and a discussion of specific capacity as it applies to sand and gravel and bedrock aquifers. Specific capacity is easy to calculate and use as a measure of the performance of your well, but something that is often overlooked. Moving forward, there is a segment on declining well performance including a discussion of the chemical, physical, and microbiological factors that are the cause for drop in performance in wells. Improving the performance of your well will be discussed by examining physical and chemical methods to rehabilitate your well and improve specific capacity. Understanding the permitting considerations along with the costs of well rehabilitation services will be discussed. The final segment of the workshop will be case studies on well rehabilitation. This will tie together all of the other segments of the workshop.

The Curiosity rover's next destination is a moving mound of wind-blown dark sand blanketing the base of Mount Sharp, the focal point of the Mars mission's research, scientists said.
It will take a few days to reach the dunes, and rover drivers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory must be careful to avoid guiding Curiosity too far into the dune field and getting stuck.

A group of geologists from New Mexico Tech University may be mapping the Clovis-Roosevelt basin — part of the Ogallala Aquifer — to see how much water is left through digital mapping, how it recharges and how long it could last if no one changes how they use water, according to Clovis Commissioner Randy Crowder.
The group met with city and county officials from both Curry and Roosevelt counties to discuss how the project would work and how much it may cost, he said.

Despite a flurry of advances in modern science, scientists are still grappling with understanding many of the key functions of basic proteins relevant to human and environmental health. To help decipher some of these processes, a team led by Amro Hamdoun at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, is using the embryos of spiny marine creatures known as sea urchins to help uncover some of these mysteries, especially as they play out during the early life stages of development.

A slow-moving landslide has destroyed part of the road along Vasquez Canyon Road, in Los Angeles County, California, sending sections of the pavement as high as fifteen feet in the air, closing the road indefinitely. The landslide was still moving as of Nov. 20 and is continuing to push sections of the road higher. Geologists are currently unable to take samples and examine the hill for the cause of the movement, as the land is private property and the owner has not been notified of the landslide.
