Structure and mineralogy of hydrophilic and biwettable sub-2 μm clay aggregates in oil sands bitumen froth
Minerals
A primary concern of commercial mined oil sands operations is the extent to which one can minimize the content of water and solids contaminants in the solvent-diluted bitumen products resulting from the bitumen production processes. During bitumen production, particles of about 2 µm or less may be responsible for the stabilization of water-in-bitumen emulsions that form during aqueous extraction of bitumen and purification of bitumen froth subsequently during the froth treatment processes, thus leading to the presence of those contaminants in solvent-diluted bitumen products. In this study, we separate and analyze sub-2 µm clay solids isolated from typical bitumen froth fed to a froth treatment plant at a commercial mined oil sands operation.

Volcanic eruptions igniting coal and oil in siberia helped usher the Permian-Triassic mass extinction event or the 'Great Dying'
Nature World News
Paleontologists termed the event like the Great Dying or Permian-Triassic mass extinction. This occurred approximately 252 million years in the past, where in the span of tens of millennia, 96% of every marine life and around 70% of all terrestrial life disappeared. The area of what is currently called Siberia had ancient volcanoes disgorge massive amounts of lava and magma for approximately a million years, covering land equal from one-third up to one-half of the entire surface the U.S. Two recently published papers from different research teams discussed the causative factors of the Great Dying. They reported that volcanism itself was not the sole cause of the extinction event.

New trilobite fossil reveals cephalic specialization of trilobites in Middle Cambrian
Phys.org
Trilobites achieved their maximum genetic diversity in the Cambrian. However, unlike this diversity measure, the morphological disparity of trilobites based on cranidial outline reached the peak in the Middle to Late Ordovician. Early to middle Cambrian trilobites with a specialized cephalon are rare, especially among the ptychoparioids. Even with a few exceptions, ptychoparioids exhibit a monotonous pattern of head specialization, characterized by additional cephalic border spines.

New tool predicts the flow of groundwater in abandoned coal mines
Mining.com
A new tool that uses satellite radar imagery to capture millimetre-scale measurements of changes in terrain height may help authorities manage public safety and environmental issues in recently abandoned coal mines. The tool has been developed by researchers at the University of Nottingham and its measurements can be used to monitor and forecast groundwater levels and changes in geological conditions deep below the Earth’s surface in former mining areas.
