Workshop attendees will learn the history, chemistry, sampling techniques and current treatment options of PFAS, as well as developing regulatory proposals throughout the country. More than 4,700 PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) exist in the world today. Many PFAS transform into highly persistent perfluorinated chemicals in the environment. Short-chain PFAS tend to be more water soluble and move more easily through soil to contaminate ground-water, surface water or drinking water.

Management of solid mine wastes requires detailed material characterization at the start of a project to minimize opportunities for the generation of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). Mine planning must focus on obtaining a thorough understanding of the environmental properties of the future waste rock materials. Using drill core obtained from a porphyry Cu project in Northern Europe, this study demonstrates the integrated application of mineralogical and geochemical data to enable the construction of enviro-geometallurgical models.

Permafrost degradation of coastal and marine sediments of the Arctic Seas can result in large amounts of methane emitted to the atmosphere. The quantitative assessment of such emissions requires data on variability of methane content in various types of permafrost strata. To evaluate the methane concentrations in sediments and ground ice of the Kara Sea coast, samples were collected at a series of coastal exposures.

Appalachian State University's Dr. William Armstrong has received more than a quarter million in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to complete a three-year research project titled "A Half Century of Changing Glacier Dynamics at Athabasca Glacier." The project will take Appalachian undergraduates and faculty to the Athabasca Glacier in Jasper National Park to leverage a long-term dataset that investigates how the basal motion of the Athabasca Glacier has evolved over the past half century.

Geologists are enjoying the chance to study ancient rock on the bed of the Menai Straits as the National Grid contemplates building a new tunnel.
The new tunnel would see cables laid to carry energy from the Wylfa Newydd nuclear plant, which could be opened in the mid-2020s, to the mainland.
While the National Grid is hoping to build a tunnel, geologists will be able to study 300 million-year-old rock.

A new study published in the journal Isis details a decades-old conflict between early glacier researchers in Alaska — a conflict that remains relevant today. The controversy, known as the Miller–Beckey dispute, started at the Juneau Icefield in the late 1940s when a scientist-climber named Maynard Miller clashed with fellow mountaineer Friedrich Beckey.
