The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) Michigan Section is calling for abstracts for the 2022 Environmental Risk Management Workshop to be held June 14-15, 2022, at the Ralph A. MacMullen Conference Center in Roscommon, Michigan.
The Michigan Section is looking forward to hosting this event in person in 2022! We provide high quality technical training that focuses on practical application and case studies for environmental professionals. We bring together a broad base of topic expertise and perspectives from the consulting, regulatory, academic, and industry sectors. This unique workshop forum promotes collaboration and partnership to solve complex environmental problems in a peer-to-peer learning format.

Please pay your annual dues in a timely fashion and commit to the AIPG mission. Geologists become members of AIPG for a whole host of reasons, and those reasons can change over time much as your maturing career changes over time.

Novel numerical model simulates folding in Earth's crust throughout the earthquake cycle

Earth's crust is constantly in motion. As tectonic plates that make up the lithosphere shift, pulling apart and crashing into each other, the crust fractures and folds in response. Both faulting and folding play out at fault-bend folds, which are created by ramp-décollement systems, but the dynamics and timing of folding in relation to earthquake cycles are not well understood.

Mount Semeru's deadly eruption was triggered by rain and storms, making it much harder to predict

The eruption of Mount Semeru in Indonesia tragically claimed the lives of 22 people, with another 22 still missing and 56 injured. More than 5,000 people have been affected by the eruption, and more than 2,000 people have taken refuge at 19 evacuation points.
Saturday's eruption produced an ash plume that reached 15km into the atmosphere, along with hot pyroclastic flows — dense, fast-moving clouds of solidified lava, ash and gas.

Geologists say Midwest rock formations could store carbon dioxide for 'eons'

Two proposals for carbon pipelines throughout the Midwest would pipe carbon dioxide from dozens of ethanol plants to rock formations in North Dakota and Illinois where the CO2 would be buried deep underground. Rock formations like the Mount Simon Sandstone offer the ability to bury the carbon for "eons of time" more than a mile below the surface.
