Strong hydroclimatic controls on vulnerability to subsurface nitrate contamination across Europe
Nature Communications
Subsurface contamination due to excessive nutrient surpluses is a persistent and widespread problem in agricultural areas across Europe. The vulnerability of a particular location to pollution from reactive solutes, such as nitrate, is determined by the interplay between hydrologic transport and biogeochemical transformations. Here, we demonstrate the strong spatiotemporal heterogeneity of hydrologic transport dynamics and reveal that these dynamics are primarily controlled by the hydroclimatic gradient of the aridity index across Europe.

Revised chronology of central Tibet uplift (Lunpola Basin)
Science Advances
Knowledge of the topographic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau is essential for understanding its construction and its influences on climate, environment, and biodiversity. Previous elevations estimated from stable isotope records from the Lunpola Basin in central Tibet, which indicate a high plateau since at least 35 Ma, are challenged by recent discoveries of low-elevation tropical fossils apparently deposited at 25.5 Ma. Here, we use magnetostratigraphic and radiochronologic dating to revise the chronology of elevation estimates from the Lunpola Basin.

Understanding agriculture's impacts on 'the zone where rock meets life'
Penn State News
Penn State researchers are working to understand the effects that farming has on the critical zone, the slice of Earth’s surface that extends from bedrock to treetops. The critical zone is the porous boundary layer where rock, water, soil, air, and living organisms interact to form terrestrial habitats. The National Science Foundation calls it "the zone where rock meets life." It’s also where humans get their drinking water, grow crops, graze livestock and extract resources like lumber, granite and iron ore.

New geological findings from eastern Fennoscandia add new dimensions to the history of European ice
University of Turku via ScienceDaily
In Finland, the majority of the glacial and warm interval records have been interpreted to represent only the last, Weichselian, glacial cycle that took place 11,700-119,000 years ago. Researchers have now revised the crucial part of the existing stratigraphic documentation in southern Finland. The new findings show that a considerable part of the warm interval records extends further back in time than earlier thought. The new results change the established conceptions about glacial history in the area.
