This technique provides the contaminant distribution on the 6 in. to 3 ft scale, as desired. It's obtained by diffusion of the dissolved phase into an activated carbon felt strip pressed against the wall by a flexible liner in a sealed borehole.

Plan on attending AIPG's 2018 Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs. Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek & Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Fm quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have a Student Career Day on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm. And we're arranging a trip on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the 14,115-foot summit of America's mountain.

The recent dramatic increase (and more recent decline) of seismic activity in Oklahoma poses both scientific questions and environmental/economic challenges. Understanding the controlling factors of seismicity requires significant research efforts in multiple disciplines of geosciences and engineering. Oklahoma represents a natural laboratory of tectonic and induced seismicity. Many researchers from Oklahoma universities (University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, University of Tulsa, etc.), state agencies (Oklahoma Geological Survey, Oklahoma Corporation Commission) and energy companies are investigating a wide range of topics related to these earthquakes (http://earthquakes.ou.edu). In addition, adjacent states with potentially induced seismicity are engaged in activities related to the work in Oklahoma.
We propose to have a two-day workshop, Feb. 20-21, in Norman, Oklahoma. The workshop will allow researchers from Oklahoma and other states, Federal agencies, the energy industry, and other interested parties to meet and discuss models of tectonic versus-induced earthquakes, as well as explore practical procedures to mitigate seismic hazard.
Persons or teams interested in a presentation should submit a title and a 200-word abstract, including whether the presentation will be of work planned, in progress or nearing completion to: jboak@ou.edu. Presenters will be asked to complete a release form to include a web-publishable version of the presentation in the workshop summary report. That version may delete sensitive or proprietary material presented at the workshop. The workshop organizers prefer presentations that can be released publicly.
For additional information on the technical program, contact the workshop organizers: Jeremy Boak, (405) 325-7968; Kyle Murray, (405) 325-7502; Jacob Walter, (405) 325-8497.

INTRAW
The teaser tested eveyone's patience. But the waiting has lasted long enough. Finally, the video "INTRAW — Discover The Project" has arrived. Discover the purpose of this H2020 initiative, its importance in today's society and, last but not least, enjoy a quick preview of what the exciting final outcome will be: the International Raw Materials Observatory.
The Observatory will be presented at two major events scheduled during the European Commission's Raw Materials Week (Nov. 6-10):
The Observatory's launch will be celebrated during a morning session of the EU-Advanced Mining Countries conference organized by DG Grow on Nov. 7 (11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.). In addition, as one of the services the Observatory will provide in the future, an international match-making session between industry and research organizations active in the raw materials sector is organized at the end of this conference (5:20-7 p.m.). Registration for this event is now closed.
An open roundtable on the challenges of international cooperation is organized on Nov. 8 (2-3:30 p.m.). The aim of this roundtable is to discuss the challenges of international collaboration on mineral raw materials. The roundtable is co-organized by the International Raw Materials Observatory and FORAM Project. Register now for this event using the following form.

We present an expanded approach of the diffusive approximation to map strongly scattering geological structures in volcanic environments using seismic coda intensities and a diffusive approximation. Seismic data from a remarkably consistent hydrothermal source of Long-Period (LP) earthquakes, that was active during the late 2004 portion of the 2004–2008 dome building eruption of Mount St. Helens Volcano, are used to obtain coefficient values for diffusion and attenuation, and describe the rate at which seismic energy radiates into the surrounding medium.

Geofluids
It has been well documented that there exists rich petroleum and mineral resources in deep (great than 4,500 meters) sedimentary formations. Despite the huge cost involved in deep sedimentary basin exploration, thousands of deep wells have been drilled over the past few decades worldwide. By 2014, approximately 1,600 deep oil and gas fields had been found in deep sedimentary formations. These discoveries not only have proven that there are huge quantities of petroleum resources in basinal deep formations but also provided rich geological information that enables us to understand much about the properties and phase behaviors of deep geofluids and their chemical reactions with surrounding rock formations, as well as fluid flow and circulations in deep basins.

Evidence for meteorite impacts in the geological record may include the presence of shocked minerals, spherule layers and geochemical anomalies. However, it is highly unusual to find unmelted crystals from the actual impactor within an ejecta layer. Here we detail the first recorded occurrence of vanadium-rich osbornite (TiVN) on Earth, from two sites on Skye, northwest Scotland, which are interpreted as part of a meteoritic ejecta layer.

As concern rises about earthquakes induced by human activity like oil exploration, geologists at the University of Kansas report a new understanding about recent earthquakes in Kansas and Oklahoma. This breakthrough may one day lead to a method for predicting where induced earthquakes might occur and may help the energy industry and regulators decide where they can safely place wells.

Asia is key to a richer understanding of many important lithospheric processes such as crustal growth, continental evolution and orogenesis. But to properly decipher the secrets Asia holds, a first-order tectonic context is needed. This presents a challenge, however, because a great variety of alternative and often contradictory tectonic models of Asia have flourished.

Although underground dinosaur tracksites inside anthropic cavities such as mines or tunnels are well-known throughout the world, footprints inside natural karstic caves remain extremely rare. The Malaval Cave (Lozère, southern France) is well-known by speleologists for the abundance and the exceptional quality of acicular and helictite aragonite speleothems. Recent palaeontological prospecting inside this cave allowed the discovery of tridactyl dinosaur tracks. Here, a detailed study of theropod footprints was for the first time conducted inside a natural karstic cave, using photogrammetric imaging technique.

Unprecedented rainfall across the state of Texas in May 2015 produced flooding that claimed at least 24 lives across the state. The most devastating single event over this period occurred on May 23-24 along the Blanco River, where a fast moving floodwave resulted in eleven fatalities in the town of Wimberley. The storm event resulted in the flood of record at the USGS gauge in Wimberley, which has collected data since the 1920s.
