University of South Florida via EurekAlert
On the early Earth, light came not only from the sun but also from the incessant bombardment of fireball meteorites continually striking the planet. Now, the recent work of University of South Florida associate professor of geology Matthew Pasek, USF researcher Maheen Gull, and colleagues at Georgia Institute of Technology, has demonstrated that these meteorites may have carried within them an extraterrestrial mineral that, as it corroded in water on Earth, could have provided the essential chemical spark leading to the birth of biological life on the planet.

Geologists are extremely important in enabling us to learn about the Earth, which is why we decided to determine the 11 cities with the highest demand for geologists. In order to determine the cities that value geologists, we determined the average annual salary for a geologist in the city, as a higher salary means greater demand. We also determined the total number of jobs available for geologists, as more jobs mean greater demand and requirement for geologists. We obtained our data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Somewhere in the Arctic, in the interior of the Greenland ice sheets, there lies a glacier like no other. This glacier quakes once every minute, more frequently than ever observed. Geologists now believe that studying these ice quakes could help them better understand how ice melts and reacts to rising temperatures and better model ice flow.

No evidence supports the existence of a Nazi "gold train" loaded with treasures and buried in Poland at the end of World War II, researchers said Dec. 15.
The experts from Krakow's prestigious Academy of Mining said a tunnel could exist but that there was no sign of a train at a site near the southwestern town of Walbrzych. The story sparked a flurry of global media interest in September when two men claimed to have discovered an armoured Nazi train using ground-penetrating radar.

While the ocean covers roughly 70 percent of our planet's surface, we currently only have about 5-7 percent of that spectacularly large area mapped in any meaningful way. In fact, we have better maps of the surface of the moon and Mars than we do of the ocean floor. XPRIZE, the non-profit foundation whose lofty mission is to "design and manage public competitions" that better mankind, has just launched a new ocean challenge which will likely draw the attention of marine scientists, geologists and hobbyists everywhere.
