Money has become so tight at the Pentagon that the nation's top military officer has decided he doesn't need a formal oil portrait, costing tens of thousands of dollars, to commemorate his tenure. Instead, Admiral Mike Mullen is going to basically photocopy the portrait already done of him in his prior job as chief of naval operations. Then he's going to leave that fake with the Navy, and take the original oil to hang in the Pentagon's E-ring alongside those of his 16 predecessors as chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. More
2012 DoD budget should exceed one-fifth of desired savings

Arkansas governor proposes half-cent cut for grocery tax

Mike Beebe is asking lawmakers to cut another half cent from the state's sales tax on groceries in a tight budget that doesn't call for any other tax cuts or increases, a spokesman said recently. The cut will cost about $20.8 million, the state Department of Finance and Administration said. "It's been pretty difficult in the sense that I feel like a lot of people are in the same kind-of boat," said job hunter Megan Allen. This year's unexpectedly strong peak season for intermodal traffic suggests that shippers are getting ready for lots of packages under the Christmas tree, according to the Intermodal Association of North America. Volume across the intermodal network in late summer and early fall "exceeded all expectations," IANA said in its latest quarterly report. Much of the 20 percent third-quarter gain from the 2009 period was powered by import-dominated international shipments. NEX Atsugi holds grand reopening
After 18 months of construction in six phases, NEX Atsugi will hold its grand opening celebration on Nov. 19. Customers will find a newly expanded and remodeled NEX that now houses more merchandise in one location.
"Being forward deployed brings many challenges and sacrifices for our Sailors and their families," said Capt. Eric W. Gardner, Commanding Officer, Naval Air Facility Atsugi. "The NEX is more than just 'a place to shop.' It is a community center, a safe and familiar gathering place, a taste of home. The new store will only enhance what NEX Atsugi has brought and will continue to bring to our community. I am proud that our NEX can honor our Sailors and their families with the best that the Navy Exchange System has to offer — best brands, best prices and best service."
The new NEX boasts a total of 33,000 sq. ft. and consolidates many departments that were originally housed in outlying locations. The main NEX now carries house wares, small appliances, domestics, infant care, health and beauty products, books, magazines, greeting cards and Japanese giftware.
In addition to building the 14,000 sq. ft. expansion, the existing NEX was entirely remo-deled including new fixtures, paint, carpeting and lighting. Customers can still find fine jewelry, watches, sunglasses, fragrance, prestige cosmetics, handbags, clothing and shoes for the entire family, electronics, and pre-recorded DVDs and music in the main NEX.
"The NEX Atsugi Main Store project has been challenging, but much anticipated by everyone on the base," said Laura Collier, general manager, NEX Atsugi. "The dedication and determination of the NEX associates during this process cannot be measured and I am so proud of their efforts. In addition, the community support throughout the 18 months of construction and inconvenience has been tremendous. I have no doubt the new store will exceed all their expectations."
Other improvements to the NEX include a new parking lot with solar lighting, exterior seating and tables on the patio and improved associate break rooms and locker rooms.

In celebration of Veterans Day, Budweiser is joining the USO, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion to host military veterans at NFL, NBA and NHL games from Oct. 31 to Nov. 15. Budweiser is donating tickets to the USO, VFW and American Legion to distribute to local veterans.
"The game tickets are a small gesture of thanks from Budweiser to veterans across the country for their courage, sacrifice and commitment to our nation," said Dave Peacock, president, Anheuser-Busch. "Since World War I, more than 5,500 Anheuser-Busch employees have served in the military. This promotion is not only a salute the millions of veterans across the country, but also to the many veterans currently working at Anheuser-Busch."
Veterans are being provided tickets to home games of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Redskins. Tickets will also being distributed for home games of the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers, Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild, as well as the NBA's Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers and New Orleans Hornets.
In addition to the tickets, teams will be honoring veterans with special public address announcements, pre and post game ceremonies and "thank you" messages on scoreboards and video screens.
"Whether it is lending resources or raising funds for veterans and dependents of military families, Budweiser has never wavered in its commitment to support the men and women of our nation's military and their families," said Sloan Gibson, USO presi-dent and CEO.
