Matthew X. Joseph, a contributor for District Administration Magazine, writes: "Before FETC 2019, my professional social media presence was exclusively on Twitter (@matthewxjoseph). That was until I had a conversation with a successful and reputable professional — Rita Oates, education consultant and former ed tech director for Miami-Dade County Public Schools — who told me I was missing out by not being on LinkedIn."

Martin Luther King Jr.'s belief that every individual has an innate capacity for leadership was a cornerstone of the civil rights movement. His leadership style — under which thousands of others were able to display moral heroism and rise to greatness — shows how powerful a facilitator can be and is one that can be adopted by education leaders.

Teachers across the United States are doing unpaid overtime and "invisible work" before and after school, on weekends, and during their presumed breaks. For teachers working in dual language and bilingual programs, this problem is exacerbated by the lack of ready-made materials in their language of instruction, so many put in additional time and resources to find, create and translate materials.

The beginning of every new year spawns a flurry of predictions. This year's predictions in education mark a definite shift in direction. According to experts, education will be moving away from one-size-fits-all assessments and memorizing facts to learning how to make a difference. In the next decade, solving complex problems will be most important for students. Forbes predicts that, instead of an obsession with testing and ranking, cohort education will involve place-based learning experiences. Experiential learning will slowly become the new normal.

Young teachers want to use technology to make a difference in the classroom, but they don't feel like their preparation programs have adequately equipped them to use do so. They expect to work in diverse classrooms, but they don't feel properly trained. And they are worried about stress and burnout. These are some of the findings from Microsoft Education, which, in partnership with the Economist Intelligence Unit, surveyed 1,034 student-teachers and early-career teachers around the world. Most of those teachers are part of Generation Z, which covers people born from 1995 to 2015.

Twenty or 30 years ago, the role of an IT director centered on maintaining devices and networks — a facilities role. But today, particularly in K–12 education, IT leaders play a much more integral part in maintaining technology used in school and districts, as well as supporting overall academic goals. For example, when a superintendent is asked about district cybersecurity, "The answer can no longer be, 'Go ask my IT guy,'" consultant Ann McMullan said at the 2020 Future of Education Technology Conference in Miami. "The superintendent has to be able to talk that talk convincingly and know what he's talking about or what she's talking about."

As our world becomes more and more digital, our classrooms continue to become transformed through technology. The curriculum binders in the back of the teacher's classroom have been replaced with a shared "drive." The whiteboard at the front of the room seldom has dry erase marking on it because students know their agenda, know that their notes will always live in the "cloud" and realize that the whiteboard is really a way for the teacher to project the Google Classroom on the wall. There is an app for everything — literally.

We are at the beginning of a 4th industrial revolution and educators are faced with preparing a generation of students for many jobs that don't even exist yet. Since the term STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) was coined back in 2001, there has been growing interest in this learning philosophy to better prepare today's students for tomorrow's jobs. However, to adequately prepare the future workforce, another acronym is gaining popularity: STEAM, which adds arts to the mix.

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said in a press release she hopes the reinforcement of old guidelines and changes in grant requirements will "protect the constitutional rights of students, teachers, and faith-based institutions" and "level the playing field" between public and religious schools. However, education organizations are claiming this is an effort to push a larger agenda expanding private and religious schools while sidelining public education.

In 2017, California Assembly Bill (AB) 705, by Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, was drafted to eliminate placement bias and grant greater access for students in California's community college system. The bill, which mandates that colleges maximize students' probability of completing transfer-level English and math in a one-year timeline, aimed to address the needs of native-English-speaking high school students who were languishing from historic underplacement into remedial classes.

If publicly available data are any indication, English learners are perpetually lagging behind their native English-speaking peers academically. Indeed, report after report show that ELs consistently under-perform when it comes to statewide tests, graduation rates, course grades and more. School districts across the country are offering students a broad array of target languages to learn in dual language programs. Schools now offer dual language education in 18 languages, according to newly released data from the U.S. Department of Education. The report from the office of English language acquisition lists the number of states that offered programs in each language during the 2016-2017 school year. Spanish, by far the most common home or first language of the nation's English language learner students, topped the list with 30 states.

In most any classroom focused on helping students learn language, phrases such as "repeat after me" are commonplace, as teachers know that students need to practice saying words and putting words into sentences in order to develop language skills. In some classrooms, you might even hear phrases such as "say it with me..." or just "say ____." All of these phrases and the practice of having students chorally respond will enhance language learning by providing practice opportunities and building engagement.

Some people pick up languages like colds, or sunburns — without effort, through simple immersion in the atmosphere. Others can't hear the word "conjugate" without flashing back, in shame, to the classrooms where they failed, so long ago, to shake the curse of monolingualism. What exactly is it that allows the first group to stride around making small talk in Spanish and reading Kafka in the German while the rest of us struggle with just one language?

As soon as they feel feverish or achy, teachers must juggle a tricky mix of considerations: Do I have enough sick time left to stay home right now? Will my principal be angry if I call in sick? Are my students at a crucial juncture in their learning, and how will they do with a substitute? Will my school even be able to find a sub, or will they impose on one of my colleagues to fill in for me? With a particularly nasty flu season bearing down on the country, many teachers are trying to navigate through those kinds of questions.
