  Cyber Attacks

The new reality is that we are all susceptible to cyber attacks from others who are looking for very valuable and confidential information. However, one easy line of defense against these cyber attacks is a strong password that can at least thwart a hacker from easily getting into your computer system and downloading information such credit card numbers, creditor and debtor information, and bank account login details, to name but a few. Here are some steps you can take to strengthen your password.
  • Make sure your password is long enough, at least eight characters. The more characters there are in your password, the more difficult it could be to guess.
  • Try to make your password as random as possible. It's best to use a random series of characters that include a mix of letters, numbers and symbols. Don't use a password that includes your name or company name, and if possible try to create a password that isn't a real word.
  • Replace correctly spelled words with misspellings. This is a simple and great way to make it more difficult to guess.
  • Don't use the same passwords for multiple accounts. You never want to use the same password for multiple accounts since once a hacker discovers one password, he or she will have access to all of your important accounts.
  • Avoid passwords like this: abc1234, password, admin, iloveyou and aaaaaa.
  • If you can, create a password by making up a sentence such as: "My favorite animal is the koala bear." which would translate to: mFA1tkB! This might not be easy to remember but it is effective. This leads me to my last point.
Keep a hard written copy of your passwords in a file in a very safe and fire protected place. Also consider computer apps that are designed to protect your passwords such as My Last Pass, or others,2817,2407168,00.asp. Although it may be difficult at times to recall a "creative" password, the security benefits will far outweigh the immediate inconvenience.
