Within the last month, you received via email the October 2013 supplement to the American Lawyers Quarterly printed directory.

Once again, this supplement is in PDF form (even though it supplements a 572-page printed publication). Our clients like it this way and often save the PDF to their computer desktops for handy reference. And, quite honestly, we appreciate not having to print and mail three supplements every year – that saves us money and gives us more time to service our listees and help our clients collect what is owed. In every quarterly supplement you’ll find:

New listings. Click on any firm in the PDF to view its profile.
Changed listings. Find important updated information about listings.
Eliminated listings. Discover which law firms are no longer on our list.

As a reminder, the most-current information can always be found on our website:

10 strategies to reduce exposure to employment claims
Corporate Counsel
Martin W. Aron writes, "In my nearly 30 years representing employers in all areas of labor and employment law, employment claims against companies have increased significantly. Close to 100,000 new charges were filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in fiscal year 2012, alleging violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Equal Pay Act, and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act."

Credit reports: Be cautious when you access them
By Steve Harms
Steve Harms writes, "We've said this before, and it bears repeating, that the United States District Court in the Ninth Circuit held that the Fair Credit Reporting Act severely limits when a creditor can access a consumer credit report. Specifically, the court held a consumer credit report (Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union are the key players in this arena) could only be drawn when the underlying debt involves a 'credit transaction.' ”

Making your own luck during the legal job search
The Legal Intelligencer
The legal job market is still in crisis. Stories about inflated law salaries have been replaced with tales of woe chronicling an oversaturated market swarmed annually by mobs of debt-strapped recent graduates. While the debate over legal education and a changing legal market rages on, thousands of unemployed law school graduates nationally are focused on finding a job in a very competitive market. The key for job seekers is to stand out from the pack, land an interview and secure a paid position.

Technology holds the answer to staying compliant, reducing risk and accepting payments
By Liz Caracciolo
The Accounts Receivable Management Industry faces unprecedented challenges to their business operations and to their ability to mitigate risks related to the collection and processing of payments. The ascendance of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the perpetual regulatory and plaintiff litigation under the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act has led to a need for a fundamental re-examination of collections business operations. In addition, continued focus on best practices related to collections authorization, validation and reporting remains vital. The scrutiny has spilled over and influenced the perspectives and policies of other industry stakeholders as well, including state and local government regulatory agencies.

What our clients have to say:
Our law firm of twenty-seven attorneys plus support staff has been a listee of ALQ since our firm began in 1937, when our firm's founder, Marvin Kohner, was a sole practitioner. We can vouch for ALQ's attention to selecting qualified listees . Indeed, when we require the assistance of counsel outside the State of Wisconsin, U.S. District Court, or U.S. Bankruptcy Court geographic practice areas, we regularly consult the American Lawyers Quarterly Directory of Collection and Bankruptcy Law Firms. We consider Tom and Nancy Hamilton and the ALQ staff as an important resource.

— Christopher C. Kailas, Kohner, Mann & Kailas, S.C., Milwaukee

I have used Tom Hamilton's ALQ lawyer referral service for many years. It has always provided me with valuable information and helped establish quality business relationships. Not too long ago one of those relationships became problematic. It was at that time that both my client and I were thankful we had the protection of the ALQ's Bond program and the personal service and attention that Tom provided. The ALQ's Bond program paid the claims, provided us with security and peace of mind, protected our financial resources and preserved and enhanced our client relationship. I am grateful that Tom and the ALQ were there when we needed them.
