Scarborough homeowners charged with running illegal rooming house

From the outside, the suburban home looks like any other on the Scarborough street. But inside, 11 people lived crammed together paying $500 to $700 per month each for spaces created by subdividing rooms at 1280 Military Trail. According to Municipal Licensing and Standards (MLS) inspectors, there were three bedrooms in the basement, four on the main floor and five on the upper level.

Halton region to defend development charges bylaw at OMB meeting

Halton Region's development charges (DC) bylaw will be "vigorously defended" when they go before the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) later this month. Regional council approved a resolution in a 21-1 vote directing staff to take any and all action necessary to defend the Region's position and interests to the OMB when it comes to its DCs bylaw.

Casino bidders tell council they strongly favour a downtown location

A key player in a proposed downtown Hamilton casino and hotel complex says it would look at the possibility of putting it in Flamborough, but it's not the preferred location. P.J. Mercanti from Carmen's Group, a member of the RockHammer consortium backing the Hard Rock casino proposal for downtown Hamilton, told councillors that he'd have to talk to his partners if council would only consider a casino at the Flamboro Downs site.

Does the Waterloo Region want a casino?

The Ontario government plans to rake in $1 billion more every year in gambling revenues by 2018 and wants more gaming establishments to get this cash. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation would love to put the casino earmarked for this part of the province as close as possible to where most of the gamblers would live — Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge.

Peel Health to table smoking ban

Peel Public Health wants to ban smokers from lighting up on municipally owned properties and outdoor child play areas. Public health officials will soon recommend Peel Region Council enact a bylaw prohibiting smoking within nine metres of playgrounds, recreational facilities and entrances to municipal buildings.
