Ontario to introduce provincewide regulations on carding

Ontario will bring in regulations to govern police carding in cities across the province, in a bid to allay criticisms that the controversial practice violates privacy and leads to racial profiling. Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi will announce that the government is forming a working group to consult with police and civil-liberties groups on what the regulations should be, sources with knowledge of the plan told The Globe and Mail.

Newmarket likely dropping plans to restrict community mailbox installation

If Newmarket continues to fight the installation of community mailboxes by Canada Post, it will be engaging in an arm-wrestling match it likely cannot win, Regional Councillor John Taylor says. After receiving advice from town staff, it appears council will back down on its attempt to fight the switch from home delivery to community mailboxes. A report on the subject was received by committee of the whole with no further direction given to staff.

Ontario elementary-school report cards will be sent in some areas, but not Toronto

Some elementary students in Ontario will still receive report cards despite a province-wide work-to-rule action, but the 170,000 students in Toronto will not be among them. Elementary teachers in the province's public system are obeying the law by submitting marks to school administrators. But to protest against stalled contract talks, they are refusing to enter those grades into the computer system.

An Ottawa taxi driver will no longer be allowed to work for his company and his taxi license has been suspended after he refused to move for an ambulance and went on an expletive-laden rant, all captured in a video posted to YouTube. Hanif Patni, president and CEO of Coventry Connections, said the Capital Taxi driver would not co-operate with an internal investigation after he was caught arguing against moving his taxi stationed in front of the Rideau Centre recently.

Ontario to introduce new measures to protect patient privacy

Ontario is improving privacy and accountability in the health care system with new measures to protect the personal health information of patients. The province intends to introduce amendments to the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) that, if passed, would strengthen privacy rules, make it easier to prosecute offences and increase fines.

Provinces Working on Free Trade Deal

Canada's provinces and territories are currently negotiating a new Canada-wide free-trade agreement, with a proposed deal to be reached by March. Current interprovincial trade barriers, in some circumstances, make it easier for some Canadian businesses to trade with the United States or European Union, than other Canadian provinces.

Off-road Vehicles to be Allowed on Highways

The province is moving forward with new transportation regulations to allow off-road vehicles with more than one rider to travel on some highway shoulders. The new changes will come into effect on July 1, 2015.
