New Ontario road rules come into effect this fall

Ontario transportation officials are reminding motorist to be aware of new provincial road rules coming into effect this fall. CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) has launched its Heads Up! campaign to remind drivers of changes to the province's Highway Traffic Act. Fines for distracted drivers will increase from the old range of $60 to $500 to between $300 to $1,000, plus three demerit points.

Uber faces class action lawsuit filed on behalf of Ontario taxi drivers

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Uber and UberX on behalf of cab and limousine owners and drivers in Ontario. The suit was filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice by law firm Sutts, Strosberg LLP. The plaintiff, Dominik Konjevic, is seeking $400 million in compensatory damages, $10 million in punitive damages and an injunction prohibiting UberX from continuing to operate in the province.

Toronto Distillery Company sues LCBO over markup

A Toronto craft distillery known for its unaged whiskey and organic beet spirits is suing the LCBO, claiming the public alcohol monopoly's markup on each bottle of booze sold is "unconstitutional." While the tax on beer and wine is set out in the Alcohol and Gaming Act, Charles Benoit, a co-founder of the Toronto Distillery Company, says the LCBO unilaterally imposes a tax of 45.9 per cent on every bottle he sells at his distillery without any basis in law.

Wynne rejects quick byelection call for new PC Leader Patrick Brown in Simcoe North

New Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown won't get a chance to seek a seat in the Ontario legislature before the fall session begins Sept. 14. Premier Kathleen Wynne rejected a request from Brown on Thursday for an immediate byelection in Simcoe North, where veteran Tory MPP Garfield Dunlop announced he would step aside Aug. 1 so the new PC leader could run for a seat.

Uber drivers could be fined up to $25,000 in Waterloo Region
The Record
Residents looking to make some extra cash by driving for Uber could find themselves with a fine of up to $25,000. The Region of Waterloo has decided it will investigate and possibly charge Uber drivers with contravening the municipality's taxi bylaw but only on a complaint basis. Coun. Jane Mitchell, chair of the regional committee which oversees taxis, said staff decided that they will enforce the local taxi bylaw.
