Moving Ontario's ticket-fighting system online could infringe rights

The Ontario government is trying to come up with a way for people to fight traffic-related tickets and charges online, but some critics worry the move could infringe on democratic rights. In the past year more than 10,000 infractions brought people to the provincial courthouse in Ottawa on Constellation Drive to fight parking tickets, speeding violations and other minor offences — a process that leads to high court costs.

Ontario begins public consultations as it moves to regulate police street checks

The provincial government says it's launching public consultations on police street checks — commonly known as carding. The public consultations are to begin next month and include community organizations, police, academics, civil liberty organizations and members of the public. The province is looking for input on the circumstances when police may ask people for information, the rights of those being asked, training requirements, and data collection and retention.

Are fish getting high on cocaine?

Both prescription and illegal drugs such as morphine, cocaine and oxycodone have been found in surface waters in Canadian rivers. New research from McGill shows that wastewater discharged from wastewater treatment plants in the Grand River watershed of southern Ontario has the potential to contaminate sources of drinking water with these drugs.

Halton demands province change Development Charges Act

The Province must amend its Development Charges Act (DCA), says Halton Region. Without changes, Halton can't accommodate growth, Regional councillors said this week. "We are asking the Province to amend the DCA so that municipalities can recover the full costs of growth," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "For too long we have been limited in what we can recover for growth-related infrastructure, resulting in a shortfall that amounted to more than $148 million within the last 15 years."

AMCTO has released its submission as part of the Municipal Elections Act Review, launched by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing in late spring. AMCTO's submission contains 23 specific recommendations under the themes of modernization and clarity. You can find a copy here.
