ABA Burn Center Crisis Status Updates
|
   |
While COVID-19 is not directly a burn care issue, it is important that we attempt to track a basic set of data to help us gauge the impact we are already seeing that on how we deliver care and help us understand where our resources are stressed.
We have created a very short survey that we will send weekly on Fridays until the national emergency is lifted. The survey was sent via email to the burn center director and nurse leader in the ABA database. If you have not received the email, please contact abacentraloffice@ameriburn.org.
We have created a COVID-19 Resources Folder in the library of the All-Member community of myAmeriburn. We encourage you to review the resources and add in your own to share with ABA members! Login in using your ABA username and password.
If you need assistance, please contact abacentraloffice@ameriburn.org.
With so many people spending time at home, most don’t know that more than 73% of burn injuries occur in the home. We have created a few Burn Prevention Helpful Tips to keep families safe as they balance work and play within the home. Visit our Prevention Resources page for the helpful guides to share in your community. Also, watch for these on Facebook and Twitter and help get the word out by sharing them more broadly.

The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc across the country, especially among those with chronic respiratory problems and compromised immune systems.
These include 9/11 first responders and veterans who were exposed to the toxic plumes that emanated from burn pits. Both groups constitute large parts of a population living with a higher risk of serious complications from COVID-19.

Eleven-year-old burn survivor Kaden Howard of Sylvan Lake hopes his story will help others in a similar situation find their will and hope to get better.
Recently, he was named the 2020 Champion Child for the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.
It came with $500 for Howard to spend as he liked, which he admits was spent on some video games.

A Stewartville man was severely burned Monday and Olmsted County investigators are trying to figure out what happened.
Sheriff’s Office Capt. Scott Behrns says a witness reported an abandoned building was burning on property. The witness also saw a man running from the site to a nearby residence.
Deputies found the man there wearing only boxer shorts. Behrns says the man had either ripped the clothes off or they were burned.

Bettendorf News
As a career firefighter, it is no surprise that there is a special place for burn victims in Bettendorf Fire Chief Steve Knorrek's heart.
But Knorrek has done more than just care about these victims. For the past seven years, he has donated time and energy to work with burn survivors and promote fire prevention. For his commitment, Knorrek received an Outstanding Member award from the St. Florian Fire and Burn Foundation, headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa.

Firefighters were able to quickly knock down a fire that had spread from a woman's stove to the rest of her kitchen, sending her to the hospital's burn unit.
Crews were called to the home on Midmoor Boulevard, according to Hernando County Fire Rescue.

ACM Surgical comes in powder and pad form with various sizes. Both are pure Type 1 Bovine Collagen with the pad being physically cross-linked, i.e., no added chemicals.
Physically cross-linking a pad enhances the collagen by prolonging the tensile strength and delaying the degradation of the collagen matrices.

Lung injury caused by chemical gas inhalation is a common clinically severe disease that very easily progresses to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Traditional respiratory support consists mainly of mechanical ventilation, but the prognosis of this condition is still poor. “Awake”extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) maintains oxygenation, improves ventilation, adequately allows the injured lungs to rest, and avoids complications associated with sedation, intubation, and mechanical ventilation.
