Reminder: Renewal of 2023 Registration
PGO
A friendly reminder for those whose 2023 annual dues remain outstanding that you have until Jan. 15 to pay for your renewal fee. On Jan. 16, 2023, unpaid registrations will be suspended. In section 13. (2)(a) of the regulation, it states that if the registrant wishes to renew a registration after the 15 day (grace) period, they will need to pay the full registration fee and a $207.64 reinstatement fee and (b) provide reasons for failing to pay the annual registration fee in accordance with subsection (1). This payment must be received by April 1, 2023. Please do not hesitate to contact the PGO office at info@pgo.ca if you have any questions or require assistance in renewing your registration.

PGO welcomes new staff member, Gabrielle Hosein, P.Geo.

PGO is pleased to welcome Gabrielle Hosein, P.Geo. as its new Assistant Registrar. Gabrielle is a geoscientist with experience across North America and Ecuador. She received a Bachelor of Science in Geology and Physical and Environmental Geography from the University of Toronto and a Master of Science in Hydro-Informatics and Water Management from the University of Nice. In her role, she is responsible for assisting with all aspects of the registration and regulations process, and providing support to the Registration and Enforcement and Compliance (E&C) Committees.
Gabrielle lives in Toronto. She enjoys cooking, reading, running and swimming. Please join us in welcoming Gabrielle to the PGO team. You can reach Gabrielle at ghosein@pgo.ca.

Mining of novel secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters from acid mine drainage

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is usually acidic (pH < 4) and contains high concentrations of dissolved metals and metalloids, making AMD a typical representative of extreme environments. Recent studies have shown that microbes play a key role in AMD bioremediation, and secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters (smBGCs) from AMD microbes are important resources for the synthesis of antibacterial and anticancer drugs.

'People-sized': Huge, thick ice chunks flow down Fraser River and wash up near Agassiz

Huge chunks of ice that formed on the Fraser River this winter have washed up near Agassiz and Chilliwack, drawing quite a crowd to the shores.
Brent Ward, a professor in the Earth Sciences Department at Simon Fraser University and co-director of the Centre for Natural Hazard Studies, told Global News this is not an uncommon phenomenon but what makes this year unique is the fact that the ice chunks are so thick.
