Free webinar! InfraIntelligence: Funding Green Infrastructure
Actual Media
Feb. 25, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
The Government of Canada has informed the country of its plan to develop all future infrastructure through a green lens. This is a key pillar to the post-pandemic economic "reboot" and has included several funding programs and streams dedicated to building (and renewing) public infrastructure assets which are less carbon-intensive, more resilient and "green." In parallel to these economic drivers, there is growing appreciation for, and accounting of, our municipal natural assets and the role that nature has in helping achieve our climate goals.

Geological phenomenon widening the Atlantic Ocean
University of Southampton
An upsurge of matter from deep beneath the Earth’s crust could be pushing the continents of North and South America further apart from Europe and Africa, new research has found.
The plates attached to the Americas are moving apart from those attached to Europe and Africa by four centimetres per year. In between these continents lies the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a site where new plates are formed and a dividing line between plates moving to the west and those moving to the east; beneath this ridge, material rises to replace the space left by the plates as they move apart.

Scientists identify flank instability at a volcano with history of collapse
Penn State
Landslides caused by the collapse of unstable volcanoes are one of the major dangers of volcanic eruptions. A method to detect long-term movements of these mountains using satellite images could help identify previously overlooked instability at some volcanoes, according to Penn State scientists.

Mysterious magnetic fossils offer past climate clues
University of Utah
There are fossils, found in ancient marine sediments and made up of no more than a few magnetic nanoparticles, that can tell us a whole lot about the climate of the past, especially episodes of abrupt global warming. Now, researchers including doctoral student Courtney Wagner and associate professor Peter Lippert from the University of Utah, have found a way to glean the valuable information in those fossils without having to crush the scarce samples into a fine powder.
