2021 Symposium Spotlight — Risky Business: A Changing Paradigm of Managing Risks in a Changing World
PGO
Panel Session B — April 22, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Join Panel Session Co-Chairs, Paul Hubley and Imran Khan as we explore how geoscientists, from entry-level to highly experienced, have to navigate through an evolving landscape of risks. Just as the geologic record is characterized by slow methodical change punctuated by sudden events that dramatically alter the landscape, trends and events in risk management can change the risk paradigm for practicing geoscientists. Register online for this session or for the full Symposium by March 26, 2021 to get the early bird rate.

Scientists use forest colour to gauge permafrost depth
Geophysical Institute
Scientists regularly use remote sensing drones and satellites to record how climate change affects permafrost thaw rates — methods that work well in barren tundra landscapes where there’s nothing to obstruct the view.
But in boreal regions, which harbor a significant portion of the world’s permafrost, obscuring vegetation can stymy even the most advanced remote sensing technology.

Making sense of commotion under the ocean to locate tremors near deep-sea faults
Kyushu University
Researchers from Japan and Indonesia have pioneered a new method for more accurately estimating the source of weak ground vibrations in areas where one tectonic plate is sliding under another in the sea. Applying the approach to Japan’s Nankai Trough, the researchers were able to estimate previously unknown properties in the region, demonstrating the method’s promise to help probe properties needed for better monitoring and understanding larger earthquakes along this and other plate interfaces.
