Complete the 2021 Diversity and Inclusion Survey
Message from the PGO Council President, Scott McLean, and the Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Ad hoc Committee, Mary-Anne Hildebrandt
We need your input!
As a self-regulatory body responsible for regulating Ontario’s Professional Geoscientists, PGO is committed to helping facilitate engagements that actively promote the principles of diversity and inclusion within PGO and among its staff, volunteers, registrants and student members. To assist PGO in better understanding diversity and inclusion (D&I) issues, we need your help by completing the D&I survey which takes 10-15 minutes to complete. The information collected will greatly help in developing D&I resources that align with the mandate of public protection. Results of the survey will be communicated in due course on the PGO website.
We also would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the members of PGO’s Diversity and Inclusion Ad hoc Committee for committing their time and efforts to develop this important survey.
Please complete the survey before or by June 30, 2021. Thank you in advance for your input. Click on 2021 PGO’s Diversity & Inclusion Survey.

Coastal Erosion Challenges and Solutions — Lessons Learned from Case Studies
STEP
2021 Sustainable Technologies Evaluation Program (STEP) Water Webinar Series
Hosted by Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), Credit Valley Conservation (CVC), and Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA)
May 27, 2021 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. ET
What are the challenges and solutions to coastal erosion in Canada, and what can we learn from case studies across North America? How can improved erosion control practices bring about economic, environmental and community benefits? This session will address the causes of, and solutions to erosion along Canada’s marine coasts and freshwater lakes by examining several case studies and applying lessons learned. Our climate is changing; the water levels along our marine coasts and Great Lakes are fluctuating, there is higher intensity and more frequent storm events.

Call for nominations! Applied Hydrogeology Award 2021
International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH)
Deadline for submission of nominations: July 1, 2021
This award aims to recognize those who have made an outstanding contribution to the application of hydrogeology, resulting in an increase in living standards in low and middle income countries. We would especially like to receive nominations for our many colleagues who have less opportunity to publish papers in scientific journals and whose work is perhaps less well-publicized but nonetheless essential.

Webinar: How Complex Should a Groundwater Model Be?
Hosted by Groundwater Modelling Decision Support Modelling
June 23, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. Australia Central Standard Time
Because environmental systems are complex, models must be complex too. Otherwise, how can they simulate the impact of human management on natural systems? This applies especially to groundwater systems. After all, water flows through heterogeneous media and interacts with surface water bodies in complex ways.

Moving towards green energy has its drawbacks
Windsor Star
On March 11, Canada’s Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan released a list of 31 so-called critical minerals “essential to the economic and energy security” of Canada.
Being included on the list of 31 was based upon each mineral (or group of minerals as rare earth elements account for one listing) meeting at least one of three criteria.

Canada's swamps are the secret weapon to fighting climate change, say experts
CBC News
They may be among the most misunderstood landscapes, but scientists say Canada's swamps have a powerful role to play in combating climate change.
Bogs, marshes and wetlands across the country are the secret stars of carbon capture, but most people don't realize their worth, said Christina Davy, a research scientist for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Researchers discover geologic process 'tearing apart' plates of the Earth's crust
University of Toronto
Geoscientists at the University of Toronto and Istanbul Technical University have discovered a process in plate tectonics that shows tremendous damage occurs to areas of Earth’s crust long before it should be geologically altered by known plate-boundary processes — a finding that sheds new light on the planet’s tectonic cycle.
