New Gold Mine Will Support Economic Recovery in Northern Ontario

The Ontario government is supporting the construction of IAMGOLD's new Côté Gold Mine, a project that will drive long-term economic growth and support a strong recovery in Northern Ontario. When fully operational, the mine is expected to employ 450 people, generate more than $5 billion in wages, and contribute $10 billion to Ontario's gross domestic product over its 18-year life span.

Toronto mining convention goes online for 2021

The 2021 version of the world's biggest mining show will be held virtually.
The Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) said its annual convention will be online next March for first time in its 89-year history.
PDAC was held last March in Toronto at the outbreak of the pandemic in Ontario, which resulted in Sudbury's first COVID-19 case.

City of Greater Sudbury invests in northern research and development

The city of Greater Sudbury, through the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation, says it is boosting economic recovery efforts with investments in local research and development projects. The economic development board has awarded $739,000 to leverage a variety of business initiatives since early 2020 through a $1 million community economic development fund.

UW creates economic model to assess monetary damage of Great Lakes from climate change

The University of Waterloo’s Water Institute created a hydro-economic model that can determine the unknown or invisible value of water.
According to a release, this model is the first attempt at valuing water's role in the broader economy of the Great Lakes Basin and Ontario as a whole.

Volcanic ash may have a bigger impact on the climate than we thought

When volcanos erupt, these geologic monsters produce tremendous clouds of ash and dust — plumes that can blacken the sky, shut down air traffic and reach heights of roughly 25 miles above Earth's surface.
A new study led by the University of Colorado Boulder suggests that such volcanic ash may also have a larger influence on the planet’s climate than scientists previously suspected.

The paper The Widespread Environmental Footprint of Indigo Denim Microfibers from Blue Jeans examines the footprint of modern blue jean society by investigating the environmental distribution, pathways, and sources of indigo denim microfibers shed by denim clothing. Microfibers comprised 87−90 per cent of the anthropogenic particles found in sediments from the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Laurentian Great Lakes, and shallow suburban lakes in southern Ontario.

High-fidelity record of Earth's climate history puts current changes in context

For the first time, climate scientists have compiled a continuous, high-fidelity record of variations in Earth’s climate extending 66 million years into the past. The record reveals four distinctive climate states, which the researchers dubbed Hothouse, Warmhouse, Coolhouse, and Icehouse.
