PGO Starts Fall Outreach to Ontario Universities
PGO
PGO has started its annual Fall outreach to Ontario universities with in-person information session on P.Geo. registration. PGO continues to provide virtual sessions for those that requested for this option. The outreach will continue through to January 2023. PGO acknowledges our Councillors who volunteer their time to deliver this information session in partnership with our staff, Eilidh Lewis, P.Geo., Acting Registrar. We thank Regional Councillors, David Leng, P.Geo., Claire Milloy, P.Geo., Robert Hearst, P.Geo,, Ryan Weston, P.Geo., Laura Katz, P.Geo. and Paul Hubley, P.Geo. We also acknowledge faculty and staff from Ontario universities for working with us to make this outreach possible.

Practical Geocommunication Online Course

Free to PGO registrants, GITs and student members
PGO encourages its registrants, GITs and student members to take the Practical Geocommunication Online Course developed by Dr. Haydon Mort and made available for free through Geoscientists Canada. This course provides communication tips and strategies for geoscientists. Completion of this course counts as a continuing professional development (CPD) activity. Ford: Mine expansion opening 'a fabulous day' for Ontario

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was impressed that mining giant Vale has spent $945 million to bring an old mine "back to life," saying the project was a key part of the province’s critical minerals strategy.
The premier was in Sudbury for the official opening of the Phase 1 expansion to Vale’s Copper Cliff Complex South Mine, a project that connected the South Mine operation to the North Mine creating the new Copper Cliff Mine Complex.

The United Steelworkers union (USW), along with the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW), are aiming to understand whether amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and motor neuron diseases (MNDs) are occupational illnesses that qualify for compensation.
The groups are seeking out mining industry workers or their surviving family members who will be willing to participate in a new study.

NWMO reveals concepts for Centre of Expertise in Ignace

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has unveiled its newest project, a $21 million facility for scientists and experts to continue their research on nuclear waste management and a wide variety of disciplines.
The Centre of Expertise will be located in either Ignace or South Bruce, depending on which will of the two is selected as host community for the deep geological repository to house spent nuclear fuel.

Report shows tectonics to be main driver of hillslope 'connectivity'

Chances are good that most people reading this are situated on a hillslope, as hillslopes cover some 90 per cent of the Earth’s landmass.
Hillslopes are critical landscape features that move water from ridges down to valleys, transport sediments and nutrients, and link terrestrial ecosystems with aquatic ones — facets of a hillslope’s “connectivity.”
