Sixty-nine of the nation’s leading cancer research and treatment facilities are backing the safety and efficacy of the vaccine used to prevent the human papillomavirus (HPV). A joint statement issued by the group of National Cancer Institute-designated centers recommends boys and girls receive three doses of the HPV vaccine at ages 11 or 12. While all 69 cancer centers have always supported using the HPV vaccine, this is the first time the organizations have collectively issued what they referred to in the joint statement as “a call to action.”

The American Society for Cytotechnology invites cytotechnology students to submit applications for the Bob Gay Scholarship. This scholarship was established by Kim Kowalczik in memory of her father, Bob Gay, who made significant contributions to the education of cytotechnology students and was a founding member of the ASCT.
The scholarship awards $1,000.00 and sponsorship (travel and accommodations) to the upcoming ASCT annual conference to an outstanding student. The award is based on academic performance, financial need, service and a demonstrated potential to make significant contributions to the cytotechnology profession. Student membership with ASCT is complimentary and is a requirement for the scholarship application.
The application deadline has been extended to Feb. 15. Download the application here.

The link between sexually transmitted infection Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and breast cancer has been strengthened by a new Australian study showing the virus gene sequences to be active in some breast cancers. The research, while not conclusive, has implications for women who have had HPV, as they could be at higher risk of developing some breast cancers and at younger ages.

The updated childhood immunization schedule, released Feb. 1 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, includes a couple tweaks to vaccine recommendations for older children and teens. One officially moves the recommendation for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine a few years earlier for children with a history of sexual abuse and officially recommends the HPV-9 vaccine over other HPV vaccines. Another offers all older teens the option of a meningitis vaccine previously recommended only for high-risk children.

Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer in women around the world. It affects over 500,000 women and results in nearly 275,000 deaths globally.
It's a terrible illness that is also mostly preventable and curable if caught early enough through regular, standard Pap tests and screening for the human papillomavirus.
Well, now Genentech is looking to reach out to the startup community with a new competition called the Quest Award offering $50,000 in prize money for technologies that are fighting cervical cancer.

In December, the FDA expanded the age indication for Merck’s recently approved Gardasil 9 HPV vaccine to include males aged 16 to 26 years, matching the indication of this vaccine for females. The 9-valent vaccine has demonstrated comparable antibody responses to the four HPV types included in the quadrivalent formulation and effectively prevented infection and disease related to five additional HPV types.

There's a new cancer epidemic on the rise. It's an aggressive throat and mouth cancer caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) — the same sexually transmitted virus that leads to cervical cancer — but it's affecting mostly men in the prime of their lives. Public health officials estimate that nearly 90 percent of the adult population has been infected with HPV. Most people spontaneously clear the virus within 18 months of exposure; it's not known why or how it stays around and develops into cancer in some.

New vaccines for meningococcal type B and HPV and are among the updates to the immunization schedule published for children and adults.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, known as ACIP, makes the updates every year. ACIP is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A number of medical groups, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Family Physicians, have endorsed the new schedules.
