Human papillomavirus, which causes genital warts and can lead to several cancers, is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. About 630 million people are infected worldwide, with 500,000 new infections added annually.
Although an HPV vaccine has been available for boys and girls in the United States since 2006, HPV prevalence in heterosexual men is estimated to be about 50 percent. For men who have sex with men, the estimate is 61 percent for those who are HIV-negative and 93 percent for those who are HIV-positive. Only limited data exist for transgender women globally.

HPV has rapidly assumed much greater prominence in the domains of infectious disease and oncology in the past couple of decades, especially since the recognition that several subtypes are associated with the genesis of cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, penis, larynx and oropharynx.
More than 40,000 HPV-associated cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States. HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted disorders worldwide, and it has been suggested that nearly all sexually active adults will harbor HPV at some time.

The human papillomavirus vaccines (Gardasil and Cervarix) were studied in clinical trials of tens of thousands of people. They didn't find concerning adverse effects that occurred more commonly in the vaccine group than the placebo group.
The common side effects were arm pain, headache, nausea, dizziness, and passing out shortly after getting the vaccine.

Women with locally advanced cervical cancer whose treatment follows national guidelines for care have better survival, regardless of race, ethnicity or stage of cancer. But fewer than three out of five women received guideline-based care. For black and Hispanic women, it's just over half, a new study finds. And that could help explain why cervical cancer outcomes tend to be worse for these women.

Findings of a recently published observational retrospective cohort study point to a need for increased efforts to improve timely completion of the human papillomavirus vaccine series among boys.
By identifying correlates for vaccine series completion, however, the research also suggests targets for achieving that goal.

Findings recently published in PLOS Pathogens indicate that a new drug screening platform may aid in the identification of possible drug targets for HPV.
"To date, at least 202 HPVs have been characterized, but studies suggest that the true number is considerably higher. Regardless of being studied for decades, there is still no effective cure for an ongoing HPV infection," Mart Toots, Ph.D., of the Institute of Technology at the University of Tartu, Tartu, Estonia, and colleagues wrote.

What do Gen Xers and millennials have in common? The answer has nothing to do with a love of Nirvana or the recent Doc Martens resurgence. It turns out that both groups are experiencing a sharp rise in colon and rectal cancer rates — and, reports The New York Times' Roni Caryn Rabin, the trend is fueling a new debate on when young people should be screened.

A blood test every four months could help women at high-risk of ovarian cancer find tumors early, say doctors.
There is currently no screening program for the disease, so high-risk women are advised to have their ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.
In the trial on 4,348 women, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, cancers were detected earlier, when they should be easier to treat.
