U.S. life expectancy increased in 2018 after a worrisome four-year decline, a reversal owing in part to a welcome decrease in deaths due to overdose but even more so to a drop in those from cancer. Timothy Rebbeck, the Vincent L. Gregory Jr. Professor of Cancer Prevention at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and director of the Zhu Family Center for Global Cancer Prevention, says the good news is due in part to major "success stories," including the rollout of an HPV vaccine.

The F-50 Non-Gyn Slide Processor has a liquid-based cytology system that features more cells per slide, and doesn’t need duplicate preps. The dual filtration disposable filters remove non-diagnostic material to optimize cell presentation. Cells of interest are transferred to the slide in a homogenous thin-layer cell deposit. Throughput: 50 samples/hr.

If you’re in a crowded room full of adults, look to your right and to your left. The person on each side of you — and you, too — have probably been, or currently are, infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. For most of us, our immune systems will clear the virus. But if yours fails to do so, and the virus remains in your system, it can cause health problems later in life, including six different types of cancer: cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancers in women; penile cancer in men; and oropharynx (back of the throat) and anal cancers in both women and men.

A safe and effective vaccine, HPV4, was introduced in 2006 and added a year later to the list of routinely recommended immunizations by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. In 2014, this product was improved with the release of HPV9, now covering almost all of the oncogenic serotypes. What was the result? According to 2018 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only about 51.1% of eligible adolescents aged 13 to 17 years are immunized against HPV — a far poorer rate of coverage than for other routinely recommended childhood vaccines. The underlying causes of this public health failure surely include all of the contributors to vaccine hesitancy.

Adding MRI to a standard tissue biopsy appears to enhance the accuracy of a prostate cancer diagnosis, new research finds.
The study, led by researchers at the U.S. National Cancer Institute, found that combining the two methods cut the rate of "underdiagnosis" by more than half, compared to use of either MRI or biopsy alone.
