Researchers at the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) of MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital have developed a new treatment for the pre-stages of cervical cancer, caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection.
The treatment involves using 85 percent trichloroacetic acid, an acid that is traditionally used for medical and cosmetic skin peeling. The scientists showed that complete remission was achieved in 82 percent of the patients after only one application. Moreover, the new treatment is very easy for experts to use and is very cost-effective.

Among women with human papillomavirus infection, vaginal and oral dual-site infections were low, 4 percent, and dual site infections of identical HPV strains were even more rare at 1 percent, researchers reported. Additionally, having a new sexual partner in the last year increased the risk of developing an HPV infection in both vaginal and oral locations, regardless of HPV serotype, and having more than two oral sex partners in the past year increased the risk of developing HPV infections in both areas with the same serotype, Ryan K. Orosco, M.D., of the University of California San Diego, and colleagues, reported in JAMA Otolaryngology — Head & Neck Surgery.

Recent findings published in JAMA Pediatrics indicated that the quadrivalent HPV vaccine was effective for low-income, high-risk minority females. “This study provides crucial information about the HPV vaccine in minority populations and females engaging in high-risk sexual behaviors who arguably were underrepresented in the HPV vaccine clinical trials and post-licensure studies, yet are at increased risk for cervical cancer,” Annika M. Hofstetter, M.D., Ph.D., in the department of pediatrics at the University of Washington, and colleagues wrote.

Finding out you have the human papillomavirus virus can be overwhelming. So many questions arise. Can it be treated? What are the symptoms? Will I always have HPV? Even more overwhelming is the fact that there are more than 100 types of HPV, according to the HPV Test. With so many different strains of the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is still learning about HPV, and how to prevent, treat and eliminate the virus.

While tobacco use and alcohol consumption continue to be touted as major risk factors for head, neck and throat cancers, it turns out they are not the primary causes. Instead, the primary cause is a virus — the human papillomavirus.
