A blood test for tumor-associated human papillomavirus (HPV)-DNA had near-perfect accuracy for identifying oropharyngeal cancer patients at high risk of recurrence after treatment, a prospective study showed. Overall, 28 patients tested positive for circulating tumor (ct) HPV-DNA, including 16 patients who had two consecutive positive tests. All but one of the 16 patients subsequently had biopsy-proven disease recurrence. No patient who had only negative tests developed recurrent disease.

School closures have disrupted school-based vaccinations, such as the HPV inoculation given to girls to protect against cervical cancer. Between 2 and 3 million lives are saved annually from vaccinations, the WHO says, which has urged countries to continue routine immunizations where possible.

Recent studies indicate that the incidence of oropharyngeal cancers increased more than 200% in the US between 1988 and 2004. As the most common sexually transmitted infection in adolescent and young adult women, human papillomaviruses (HPV) are responsible for nearly all cervical cancers and most anal and oropharyngeal cancers. For a study published in JAMA Network Open, Nicolas Schlecht, Ph.D., Angela Diaz, MD, Ph.D., Robert Burk, MD, and colleagues sought to assess the risk factors for oral HPV, as well as the association of HPV vaccination with HPV prevalence in the oral cavity, in sexually active female adolescents receiving the quadrivalent (4vHPV) vaccine.

A multidisciplinary team at the University of Pennsylvania has used machine learning to develop a liquid biopsy that can detect early stages of the most common form of pancreatic cancer by measuring multiple biomarkers in a single blood sample. In a blinded study, the multi-analyte test was found to be more accurate than single biomarker analysis at detecting pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), and was also better at staging disease than stand-alone imaging.
