For women with early-stage cervical cancer, postponement of surgery to 8 weeks after diagnosis did not appear to be associated with worse short-term clinical outcomes, supporting the suggestion by an expert panel that hysterectomy be postponed for 6 to 8 weeks for this patient population living in novel coronavirus (COVID-19) hotspot areas. Recently reported in Gynecologic Oncology, the single institution retrospective observational study included 217 women with early-stage cervical cancer who underwent primary hysterectomy or trachelectomy at the Los Angeles County Medical Center between 2000 and 2017.

The F-50 Non-Gyn Slide Processor has a liquid-based cytology system that features more cells per slide, and doesn’t need duplicate preps. The dual filtration disposable filters remove non-diagnostic material to optimize cell presentation. Cells of interest are transferred to the slide in a homogenous thin-layer cell deposit. Throughput: 50 samples/hr.

CAP Today
The CAP relies on the generous submission of slide-based cases from laboratories to maintain the excellent quality of its Cytopathology Educational Programs in Gynecologic Cytopathology (Pap Education), Non-Gynecologic Cytopathology (NGC), Fine Needle Aspiration Cytopathology (FNA), and Proficiency Testing Program in Gynecologic Cytopathology (Pap PT). The CAP Cytopathology Committee, composed of 26 pathologists, two junior members, and two cytotechnologist members, meets quarterly and members submit glass slides to these varied programs.

CAP Today
The CAP implemented proficiency testing for cervical cytology in 2006 as mandated by federal legislation. The performance of participants and granting of appeals on glass slides in the first year of the CAP Pap PT program was reported in detail by Crothers, et al.1 Once a participant initiates an appeal, the slide in question is pulled from the program for a blinded review by three board-certified anatomic pathologists who are members of the CAP Cytopathology Committee. In the first year, 155 participants failed the PT examination and appealed their testing results on 86 individual slides. After review, appeals were granted for 21 slides, resulting in 45 exam failure reversals. The overall appeal rate was 13/1,000 slides in the program.

A research team at Dartmouth's and Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Norris Cotton Cancer Center has found that the same vaccination programs that target human papillomavirus (hrHPV) strains in the U.S. may not be as effective in protecting other populations of women from the disease. Years of work in Honduras, led by Gregory J. Tsongalis, PhD, has shown a very different prevalence of hrHPV there compared to the U.S.

Around 1 million women have had their smear tests canceled or postponed during lockdown, charities estimate, with some warning that the long-term impact could mean an increase in cervical cancer cases. Screening has been paused almost completely in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, where only "a handful of appointments" have been carried out during lockdown, according to Kate Sanger, a spokesperson from Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust. Meanwhile, screening services in England have become a postcode lottery, with decisions about whether or not to run services decided at a local level.
