When Katherine A. Hochman, MD, associate chair for quality in the Department of Medicine at NYU Langone, contracted a mild case of COVID-19, she finally had a chance to take a step back and think. Before going into quarantine to recover, Dr. Hochman had been on the floors day in and day out attending to COVID-19 patients.

Implementation of a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine tool-kit is an effective way to increase vaccination rates among adolescents, according to results of a poster presented virtually at the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners Annual Meeting (NAPNAP 2020). The 4 Pillars Practice Transformation Program is an evidence-based tool kit that has been shown to increase HPV vaccination rates across settings, noted lead author Rachel E. Hodge, MSHS, BSN, RN, from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Staff education was conducted and patient education materials were posted throughout the primary care clinic where the kit was implemented. The Pillars were implemented over a 10-week period.

The FDA has approved an expanded indication for the human papillomavirus (HPV) 9-valent vaccine, recombinant (Gardasil 9) for the prevention of oropharyngeal and other head and neck cancers caused by HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58, according to Merck, the agent's developer. The oropharyngeal and head and neck cancer indication was approved under accelerated approval based on the effectiveness Gardasil 9 has demonstrated in preventing HPV-related anogenital disease. However, continued approval for this indication may be dependent upon verification and description of clinical benefit in a confirmatory trial, which is currently underway.

Men receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer (PCa) appear to be at lower risk for infection by the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, according to a new report.
In a study of men with PCa in Veneto, an Italian region especially hard hit by COVID-19, only 4 of the 5273 patients receiving ADT became infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus compared with 114 of the 37,161 not receiving ADT.
