Women who undergo human papillomavirus testing following a test showing abnormal cytology have earlier detection of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, compared to those who do not undergo HPV testing, according to a new study. The higher rates of detection come at the expense of increased biopsy and electrosurgical excision rates.

ASCT
As part of our efforts to support state and regional cytology organizations ASCT would like to share the following information from the ASC Foundation:
The cytology workforce, including cytotechnologists and cytopathologists, has continuing education requirements established by local institutions and national certifying agencies. Fulfilling these requirements has become increasingly difficult for several reasons; among them, decreased institutional support and loss of many of our cytotechnology training programs, which historically have been the support system for local organizations and continuing education initiatives.
$1000 grants are available from the ASC Foundation to support state and regional organizations (SROs), cytotechnology programs or laboratories. The grants are to be used for developing and hosting local continuing education events. Funds would be used primarily to support speaker travel, honoraria and meeting promotional material.
This is a mechanism for the ASC Foundation to directly promote accessible local continuing education for cytology practitioners through SROs. Strengthening local organizations with high quality, accessible meetings will help to sustain SROs as well as national organizations and our future workforce.
Organizations must submit an application and proposal by August 15th. Up to four (4) $1000 grants will be awarded. Click here for more information.

The research provides the first broad assessment of how cancer, the fertility-harming therapies that patients receive, and the decisions women make on leaving hospital, can affect plans for a family.

Survivors of index squamous cell carcinoma of the anus faced an increased risk for subsequent HPV-related cancers, according to a cohort study published in Cancer. "Over the last decade, HPV has been identified, associated with and found to be the main etiologic agent in cancer of the oropharynx and anogenital regions of men and women," Rebecca A. Nelson, PhD, staff scientist in the department of information sciences, and Lily L. Lai, MD, associate cancer center director, both from City of Hope, wrote.

The incidence of cancer is lower among people living in rural areas in the United States than among those living in more metropolitan areas. But cancer death rates are the opposite — death rates are highest in rural America, according to the first comprehensive report of its kind from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A small pilot study raises hopes that personalized cancer vaccines might prove safer and more effective than immune-based therapies already in use or further along in development. In a paper published online in Nature recently, scientists reported that all six melanoma patients who received an experimental, custom-made vaccine seemed to benefit: their tumors did not return after treatment.

Alzheimer's disease, lung cancer and brain cancer — all devastating, all leading public health challenges — have been thought to harbor connections at the molecular level, connections that could explain curious co-morbidities. Specifically, in cases of Alzheimer's disease, the risk of developing lung cancer is decreased, and the risk of developing glioblastoma, a kind of brain tumor, is increased.

For patients with colorectal cancer that has metastasized to the liver, having a primary tumor on the left side, as opposed to the right side of the colon, is known to be a significant advantage in terms of treatment response. But now a new study, presented here at the ESMO 19th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer, suggests this imbalance may be at least partially redressed.
