Study finds HPV vaccine protects children with vulnerable immune systems

While the protective benefits of the HPV vaccine in the general population are well known, new research shows it may also benefit children with weakened immune systems who are at higher risk of HPV-related cancers. The research, led by UNSW, suggests children with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and juvenile arthritis or those requiring organ or bone marrow transplants, received a boost in immune response after receiving the vaccine. HPV vaccine can protect women across a broad age range

A research paper published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases reported that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is safe and efficacious across a wide age range of women. The international study found that it protects against HPV infection in women older than 26 years. Vaccination programs worldwide currently target routine vaccination of women 26 years and younger. FDA grants AXAL fast track designation to treat cervical cancer

The FDA granted fast track designation to axalimogene filolisbac for the adjuvant treatment of high-risk locally advanced cervical cancer. The investigation of axalimogene filolisbac (Advaxis) — a targeted immunotherapy also known as AXAL that attacks HPV–associated cancers — will be conducted in accordance with the special protocol assessment (SPA) recently granted by the FDA. Cancer experts back CDC's HPV vaccine guidelines

The American Cancer Society has endorsed the U.S. government's HPV vaccination recommendations, which include immunizing all preteens against the sexually transmitted human papilloma virus. In a new report, the cancer society says 11- and 12-year-old girls as well as boys should be vaccinated to guard against cancers associated with HPV. This is in line with updated guidelines from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. READ MORE
