Eric Chow from Alfred Health has found that women who vaccinate against HPV not only protect themselves, they also protect their male partners from the virus.
There are over 100 different types of HPV, some of which are known to cause cancer. The disease is well known for its impact on women, but it can also cause genital warts, penile and anal cancer in men.

The Cyto-Tek® 2500 offers excellent
preservation of cellular structure and consistently delivers a high rate of
cellular recovery. With its patented paced acceleration feature, the instrument
automatically increases and decreases the rotational velocity based on the selected
speed, which protects fragile cells and results in higher cellular yield.

Concerns that females with an autoimmune disease might be predisposed to develop a second autoimmune disorder if exposed to the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine are unfounded, because girls and women who receive the vaccine are slightly less likely than unvaccinated persons to do so, a large population-based study indicates.

GlaxoSmithKline has received the first China FDA marketing authorization approval for a human papillomavirus vaccine, with Cervarix scheduled for a launch early next year.
In a release, GSK said the vaccine is registered for women ages 9 to 25 using a three-jab schedule.
Merck, maker of the HPV vaccine Gardasil, and GSK face the prospect of convincing more doctors to recommend the inoculations to younger patients in Asia, with the same case in the U.S. where public campaigns have highlighted potential risks of related cancers to boys and girls later in life.

For the past 2 decades, both the incidence of and mortality from cervical and breast cancers have been increasing in Japan.
The increasing mortality rates have raised concerns over the efficiency of Japan's screening programs for these two cancers; only about 35 percent of the target population participates in screening.
An article published in the July issue of the Lancet Oncology focuses on the challenges of breast and cervical cancer screening in Japan and offers recommendations for improving the situation.

A link between routine Pap smear screening and a lower risk of developing cervical cancer in women older than 65 years was confirmed in a recent study. Yet, most U.S. health guidelines discourage women in that age group from receiving routine Pap smears unless they have pre-existing risk factors.
"Some studies report that Pap smears are unnecessary in older age, while others show that there is a benefit in the over-65 age group," said Karin Rosenblatt, Ph.D., a cancer epidemiologist and a professor of kinesiology and community health at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. "There's been a great debate about it."

Healthy young women can be forgiven for being confused about how often they're supposed to be getting in to see their primary care doctor.
After all, annual checkups in general have come under scrutiny. Doctors who have reviewed the data say there is little scientific evidence to support routine pelvic exams or clinical breast exams in women who have no symptoms. Cervical cancer screening is now recommended only every three years. Even a routine blood test to measure cholesterol levels isn't recommended for women under 45.

Identifying effective cancer treatments is never an easy process, and even drugs that make it to the market are rarely effective on every patient. As cancer treatment becomes more personalized, clinicians have come to realize how biological factors beyond a patient’s control — especially gender — can determine treatment outcome. Oncologists often know a treatment may fail, not based on mountains of study, but through their own frustration that comes from treating patients.

The most common is thyroid cancer, with more than 62,000 cases annually. Other head and neck cancers, including tumors of the mouth, tongue, throat, vocal cords, and salivary glands, account for about 3 percent of all new cancer diagnosis in the U.S. This year, more than 61,000 new cases will be diagnosed.
