From Aug. 14: He had a choice. How many tweets did he want to delete?
Journalist Joel Mathis went the whole way last week. “I atom-bombed it,” said the Kansas-based freelancer, who contributes to The Week and Public Radio International.
Mathis knocked out all his old tweets just before another journalist, new New York Times editorial board member Sarah Jeong, saw her old tweets examined by the world.

The WRITER
From July 24: No, this article is not a check on the progress of your New Year’s resolution. It’s a reminder that our writing, too, can get a little ... paunchy. English lends itself to wordiness. And as word lovers, we are often tempted to trot out our favorite vocabulary and loath to let any of it go. But when it comes to writing — as with so many things — a little dab will do. Or, as I tell my students, readers will thank you for lean, clean writing. No one wants to slog through entangling vines, no matter how pretty. Here are some common offenders.

From June 19: Writing for magazines is a lot like catching a fish. It requires the right bait, understanding the conditions, finesse with timing and most of all, persistence. When it all comes together, the time and effort are worth it when you net the big one.

From July 10: With around 15 million Indians working as freelancers, the gig economy is already blooming at an outstanding speed. Despite the risks and no-security of job policy, these freelancers see no reason to stop and so more than 40 percent of the total freelancing works worldwide are acquired by Indians only.

From April 10:
It's no secret that we are in the season of the "Gig Economy." Within the next decade freelance workers will outnumber traditional salaried employees. A study by UpWork and the Freelancer's Union concluded that 57 million Americans did some sort of freelance work in 2017. As a business owner (or future entrepreneur), understanding this phenomenon can help you hire correctly and sometimes better understand your employees' needs, and in some cases, is something you may want to consider for your own career.

From Jan. 16:
It’s not easy making your way in the gig economy. But the new tax law should take out some of the sting.
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, signed by President Trump in December, aims to deliver cuts almost across the board. However, freelancers — whether Uber drivers, wedding photographers, or journalists — get a special perk.
The new benefit, which allows taxpayers to shave their taxable income by roughly one-fifth, applies to so-called “pass-through” (or business) income, starting in 2018.

From July 17: “Freelance gigs” may be interpreted differently by different people. Basically, a freelance opportunity is contract work done for clients or businesses. Freelance gigs allow professionals to complete various projects short-term, which in turn allows many people to control their own schedules and workload.

From July 3: If you're a freelance journalist or blogger eager to earn income from writing and reporting, learning to create an engaging pitch is crucial. Many writers complain, "I have a great story. How do I get the editors interested in it?" The answer is simple: Perfect your writing pitch. Here are some tips to help you master the art of pitching articles and getting an editor's attention.

From Feb. 6: If you write a lot like me — or even just occasionally — you'll probably encounter times when you struggle to find topics to write about. You would think it's easy, right? We're bombarded by stories, information, and news, so how hard could it be?
For those times when finding something to write about does become difficult, here are a few suggestions that should help you break-through your creative block, courtesy of Roy Peter Clark, the long-time writing instructor at the Poynter Institute and author of several books about the craft of writing.

From Feb. 6: Over the past couple of years, I’ve released dozens of videos and written dozens of articles on the topic of authorship. Some of those videos and articles focused on the craft of writing, while others addressed such varied things as how to land an agent, how to self-publish, how to market your work online, how to use Word or Scrivener, how to make money ghostwriting, and on and on and on.
At the end of the day, my goal has always been to help writers become better writers, not just in the practical sense, but also emotionally and financially.
