Editor’s note: Along with authoring four landmark books on public speaking including How to Write and Give a Speech (4th ed, St. Martin’s), award-winning member Joan Detz runs her own speaker services business. She has written speeches, coached executives, offered media training and taught presentation skills for clients such as Abbott Laboratories, CDC, Siemens, Fox Chase Cancer Center and many more. She has also served as a media spokesperson, appearing often on radio and TV interviews. A cascade of personal crises prompted this column, which originally appeared on her blog. I’ve published work in every genre except screenplays — and I’ve made all the mistakes!

The Writer
We all know the old adage “don’t judge a book by its cover.” But the truth is, that’s exactly what readers do.
Based on the colors, the font, and the design, a cover creates a mood causing readers to make an instant assessment and decide if the book is worthy of more attention. A high-quality cover signals to readers that the content inside is high quality; a poor design does the opposite. So a well-designed cover is vital to a self-published book’s success — and well worth the time and money to create the best one possible.

In a year when reporters have been decried as the "enemy of the people" from the highest echelons of government, the United States made its dubious debut among the deadliest countries for journalists.
Reporters Without Borders — known internationally as Reporters Sans Frontières, or RSF — has released its lists of journalists who went missing, or were killed, detained or held hostage between Jan. 1 and Dec. 1, 2018.

It’s not only credibility and reputation at stake, but privacy and safety too.
