MEMBER-EXCLUSIVE NEWS
Last week was marked by the violence at the U.S. Capitol. Many Americans, and others around the world, regardless of political affiliation, were shocked, saddened and angered. If any of our members were among the journalists covering the event, we thank you for your service and diligence. We hope everyone here was safe. We're all struggling with how to process this event and its aftermath — hang in there and give grace to yourselves and to one another. And, for real, tell your clients/bosses if you need some more time on projects, or offer it if you're the one giving the deadlines. Wishing you all well, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly editor

Jennifer Nelson published a feature on reconsidering your relationship with your smart phone in BP magazine — especially if you’re affected by mental health challenges that can make screen use, doom scrolling and FOMO more challenging.
Do you have professional news you’d like to share with the group? Wanna Write More in 2021? Try These Tips.
The Writer
As I write this, we’re on the eve of an important election here in the United States. I’ve done very little today, and I think tomorrow may be a wash as well. These are the kinds of days when it is super hard to concentrate. But these are also the kinds of days when it’s most important to concentrate. During times like these, retreating into the world we’re crafting, the memory we’re trying to resurrect, the sense we’re trying to make of our runaway imaginations can be the thing that keeps us healthy.

Should Journalists Play a Role in Identifying Rioters?
Poynter
News organizations should soon expect to hear from federal law enforcement agencies. National Press Photographers Association General Counsel Mickey Osterreicher says he expects that they will ask or demand that news organizations and individual journalists who documented the siege of the U.S. Capitol turn over their unpublished images and videos.

5 Tips on Writing a Standout Self-Published Book From Someone Who's Read Hundreds of Them
Writer's Digest
As a judge for Writer's Digest self-published competitions, it's my mini-Christmas when the books arrive. I can't help but be in awe of the work these authors have done. At the same time, I have to admit that I feel strong disappointment when an incredible book has a critical flaw — as in a mistake that I simply can't look beyond no matter how great everything else is — especially when that critical flaw is a common occurrence amongst self-published books.
