Registrations are already rolling in for 2020’s ASJA conference in New York City, held at New York Marriott Downtown, in Lower Manhattan's Financial District on April 19-20. This year's theme is "The Independent Writer's Best Friend," focused on fighting back against legal threats to a freelance writer's career and also embracing the new world of freelance journalism. We’re planning more than 50 writing workshops, panel discussions, training sessions and other events, including intimate, extended-length Mastermind sessions.
The keynote speaker is journalist and tech maven Sree Sreenivasan. Like past conferences, Client Connections (stay tuned for details about signing up for the lottery) links members with editors and agents who are hiring through short, one-on-one speed-dating-like sessions.
Register at this dedicated conference site. Questions? Contact 2020 conference chair Randy Dotinga at randydotinga@gmail.com or associate conference chair Kristine Hansen at kristinehansenwriter@gmail.com. How can we make this conference the best yet and better serve your needs? Don't hesitate to let us know!

Our roster of volunteer judges is filling out and there’s still time to join! Can you give us 3-5 (very enjoyable) hours? Besides reading some truly terrific entries, judging is a great way to get to know other members. And you get to talk about writing! (If you're entering an article or book yourself, that's fine. We can work around that.) We'll be judging through February. New members encouraged! Click here to register to be a judge.

The judge said they waited too long to challenge the restrictions, despite claiming the new rules could put some of them out of business.

About half of the letter recipients had been sued by a private-equity backed doctors group because of unpaid medical bills. The other half had been sued by a separate company.

How can news organizations inspire positive change when the public is so saturated with negative news, that a third of us are avoiding it altogether?
News avoidance makes it difficult for journalism to be heard, and it is only made harder today when you add new platforms into the mix, each with another set of algorithms and filter bubbles to contend with.
