ASJA
Mark your calendars for the next Virtual Client Connections and get ready to find new markets! Dates have been set: Feb. 26 – March 1. Sign up on ASJA’s website beginning at 2 p.m. EST on Feb. 12. Follow ASJA’s forums, ASJA Weekly and the Client Connections page on ASJA’s website for news and information about participating editors and agents.
Many ASJA members have been successful finding new markets through their participation in this completely virtual event offered a few times a year. Members are connected with editors and agents by phone or via Skype meetings.
Virtual Client Connection Chair, Kristine Hansen, and her team of volunteers are currently sending invitations to editors and agents, but always welcome suggestions. Is there a market you’re dying to break into or an editor you know is freelancer-friendly? Maybe you’d like to volunteer to help send invitations or serve as a host to our editors and agents during the event? Email Kristine at kristinehandenwriter@gmail.com.

The theme of the 48th annual ASJA conference is “Collaboration Nation,” and the agenda for the event, which is being held at the New York City Marriott Downtown on Sunday, May 5 and Monday, May 6, represents a true collaborative effort.
Co-chairs Carolyn Crist and Jodi Helmer wanted to step outside the box from previous ASJA conferences to make it an incredible event. This post tells you how!

“What can I help you with?” my advisor asked as I sat across from her.
“Can you make time appear out of thin air?”
The answer was yes. As we looked at my schedule, a schedule with a maximum of ten minutes between events, she was able to pull hours out of my breaks by encouraging me to try something new.
This isn’t a new struggle. Most writers never feel like they have enough time. I’ve been blessed to not have to pull an all-nighter ... yet.

The Writer
I emailed my friend Allison a story I wanted to publish. The story was about my experience volunteering in a foreign country and how I discovered something I don’t like about myself — I’m entitled. It was embarrassing to admit, but I know that to write a story worth anyone’s time, you have to tell the truth, even and especially if the truth is ugly, which means you have to be willing to get vulnerable. I thought I had done that. I thought the story was pretty good.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to make it as a professional writer in America today. A recent survey from the Authors Guild found that U.S. authors have suffered a drastic decline in earnings in recent years. The drop appears to be impacting nearly all categories of authorship and writers of literary fiction have been hardest hit, suffering a 43 percent fall in earnings since 2013. There was one exception and that was self-published authors who saw their book-related income almost double since 2013, though it remains 58 percent lower than for traditionally published authors.

With news of layoffs at the Dallas Morning News on Monday, 2019 didn’t start off great for local journalists. It might feel like we’re in “Groundhog Day,” but really, it’s just the state of local journalism right now, and it’s demoralizing (even if it’s not happening to you).
Poynter’s new media columnist, Tom Jones, spoke to 1 of the 20 newsroom employees to lose a job this week.
